Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, MfS) Documentation
This collection documents the administration, state security and espionage in the Soviet occupation zone and East Germany from 1948 to 1994. Over 150 archival binders contain official documents, newspaper clippings, political and military photographs, photocopies as well as official correspondence on letterhead and official reports signed by Erich Mielke (1907–2000). From 1957 to 1989, Mielke was the Head of the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, also known as the Stasi.
While the majority of documentation in this collection concerns financial and budgetary matters for the Ministry of State Security, the reports of demonstrations and arrests before and after the May 1989 elections offer a fascinating look into the time leading up to the breaching of the Berlin Wall in November and the abrupt changes in the GDR government just before and after that event. The collection ends with abundant information about the so-called “Treuhand,” the trusteeship committee of West German bankers charged with liquidating East German properties and assets.
