Operating under a pseudonym that means "no boundaries," North Korean defector Sun Mu doesn't just paint about his troubled life in the world’s most reclusive and repressive state—he paints images of hope. Sun Mu's work, currently on view at the Wende in his first-ever U.S. museum show, is imbued with nuance and heartbreak. It's political pop art that inverts the propaganda images he used to paint for the North Korean regime. In July 2014, Sun Mu was offered a historic, though potentially dangerous, opportunity: a solo exhibition in China. The documentary I Am Sun Mu follows the artist as he prepares his show undercover, and an unexpected turn of events puts Sun Mu and his friends and family in danger.

Adam Sjöberg (director/producer) has traveled to more than 60 countries, telling stories in places like Yemen, Uganda, rural China, and the streets of Colombia. He has worked with Bono and (RED) in sub-Saharan Africa, produced a massive 1,000-person installation/listening party with Kanye West in Madison Square Garden, traveled to India and Guatemala with Warby Parker, and co-produced a feature documentary with legendary rapper Nas about breaking and hip-hop in slums around the world (Shake the Dust). He is currently producing a feature film about American Samoa with NFL great Troy Polamalu, as well as producing a doc-series for Spotify about rapper 21 Savage. Adam craves authenticity and human connection, and is committed to handing the microphone over to people who might otherwise not have the opportunity to be heard.

There will be a Q & A with the filmmaker following the film. This film is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Upside-Down Propaganda: The Art of North Korean Defector Sun Mu.

Free.
