SUMMARY:S.U.T@LA – Vipassana Meditation Practice Group
DESCRIPTION:Practice Isn’t Just on the Cushion — It’s Wherever Life Takes Us \nOur practice is inspired by the teachings of Sayadaw U Tejaniya (S.U.T)\, which invite us to bring wise awareness into every part of life. Mindfulness isn’t just for the cushion — it’s for the small\, ordinary moments that make up our days. \nSome weeks\, we’ll sit together in silence at the Wende Museum. Other times\, practice might take us outdoors for a gentle hike\, to a public event\, on a mindful shopping trip\, or even online via Zoom. Wherever we are\, the essence of practice remains the same: staying present\, open\, and kind. \nThis new L.A.-based sangha is rooted in curiosity\, ease\, and Dharma friendship. Together\, we’ll explore how to live with awareness and discover what unfolds when we meet life just as it is. We warmly invite you to join us — to sit\, to walk\, to laugh\, and to grow together on this path of practice. \nPlease note we are holding Q&A session from 5PM. Q&A sessions are for continuing students only. Please contact me if you are interested in joining.

SUMMARY:WIP 022
DESCRIPTION:WIP 022 features works in progress by Faye Driscoll & Toogie Barcelo followed by a post-show talk back moderated by WIP alum Laura Stinger. \nWhat is WIP? \nWIP is an artist-led\, work-in-progress performance platform co-founded by dance artists Kate Wallich\, Stephanie Zaletel\, and Belize Wilheim. Launched in 2023\, WIP was created to give choreographers and performance makers a “low-tech\, high-visibility” space to share evolving works with audiences\, fostering curiosity\, dialogue\, and critical exchange at every stage of development. \nThe format is simple: each WIP features two artists sharing up to 25 minutes of work-in-progress\, followed by a moderated post-show conversation. \nWIP’s mission is to provide a supportive and sustainable environment for artists to test new ideas\, receive meaningful feedback\, and catalyze experimentation within the Los Angeles dance and performance community. By centering progressive and innovative work that challenges convention\, WIP strengthens the local ecosystem and deepens connections between artists\, arts institutions\, and audiences. \nhttps://www.wipla.info/#info

SUMMARY:Eat Your Ice Cream: A Conversation with Ezekiel J Emanuel\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling author Ezekiel J Emanuel shares science-based tips on aging happily and healthily. \nJoin us at the Wende Museum for a conversation with Ezekiel J Emanuel\, MD\, author of Eat Your Ice Cream! \nDr Emanuel will explore aging in a dignified and enjoyable manner\, and provide actionable tips for living a longer\, healthier life. Decades of medical experience have made Dr Emanuel one of the leading experts in his field. Come hear what you can learn from that experience\, and how you can implement it in your own life! \nAbout the author: \nEzekiel J. Emanuel\, MD is a vice provost and professor at the University of Pennsylvania. A bioethicist\, health policy expert\, and oncologist\, he was one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act. He is a regular guest on CNN and MSNBC and often contributes to the New York Times\, Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, and Atlantic. He lives in Washington\, DC. \nAbout the book: \nEveryone wants to live a full and healthy life—and every day brings a tidal wave of attention-grabbing misinformation\, faddish ideas from “wellness” influencers\, and bizarre advice from news outlets over-extrapolating the results of tiny\, outlier studies. The “Wellness Industrial Complex” prescribes conflicting and complicated regimens while promising us more time to enjoy in the future—though it sure is demanding a lot of time right now. But what actually matters most to our health and longevity? What has the most robust\, actionable evidence? What’s the junk you can skip? \nIn Eat Your Ice Cream\, renowned physician Ezekiel J. Emanuel argues that life is not a competition to live the longest and that “wellness” shouldn’t be difficult; it should be an invisible part of one’s lifestyle that yields maximum health benefits with the least work. Dr. Emanuel cuts through the noise with wit and good humor\, giving readers just what they need: simple\, high-impact\, evidence-based guidelines on such issues as alcohol consumption\, food and nutrition\, exercise\, sleep\, mental acuity\, and social engagement. Resisting the tide of the latest trends to extend life at all costs\, Eat Your Ice Cream reveals that many of the tools for a long\, healthy and meaningful life are already within reach. \nPairing common sense with uncommon wisdom based on his decades of expertise and experience\, Dr. Emanuel helps us consider which lifestyle changes are worth making and how to most easily implement them for longer\, healthier\, and happier lives. Readers will come away with greater clarity and a deeper understanding of what really matters for well-being—connection\, purpose\, and sustainable choices backed by rigorous science.

SUMMARY:All-American Story: Stories and Conversations About Immigration
DESCRIPTION:All-American Story: Stories and Conversations About Immigration foregrounds lived experience at a moment when immigration discourse is flattened by rhetoric\, bringing immigrants and first- and second-generation Americans together to share stories and songs that insist on their complexity\, specificity\, and humanity. \nFrom 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. you’ll hear true stories and music created and performed by American immigrants and 1st- and 2nd-gen Americans from around the world. \nFollowing the readings\, performers will lead a conversation about immigration\, and afterwards we’ll meet in the garden for refreshments–and conversations will continue. \nThose interested will meet back in the theater from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a workshop where professional writers\, editors and composers will help you learn how to share your own stories.
