SUMMARY:Tuesday Men's Club
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. No experience with meditation or group work is required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nMore at tuesdaymensclub.com

SUMMARY:The Sound of the City: How Urban Noise Shapes Brain and Body in LA
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the buzz of studio lights\, the din of freeways\, the howls of coyotes\, and the drone of leaf-blowers\, one of Los Angeles’ most distinctive sounds comes from above. As the birthplace and global capital of helicopter police patrolling\, LA maintains the first and largest police aviation fleet in the world\, making its aerial surveillance an inescapable feature of daily life for millions of residents. This talk traces the local sonic history of that noise and asks what it means for the people living beneath it. \nDrawing on ongoing research\, Shapiro and Tornini move from historical analysis to the frontlines of public health science\, examining how chronic exposure to police helicopter noise shapes health outcomes and educational environments across the city. The talk closes by zooming out to the biological — exploring how these noise exposures alter behavior in animal models\, and how they compound with other urban stressors like extreme heat to produce cascading effects on developing bodies and minds. \nNicholas Shapiro is an Associate Professor of Biology and Society at UCLA and Director of Research at the UCLA-CDU Dana Center for Neuroscience and Society. His community-centered environmental health research has been featured in The New Yorker\, The LA Times\, PBS\, The Guardian\, The Washington Post and beyond. \nValerie Tornini is an Assistant Professor in UCLA’s Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology and the Institute for Society and Genetics. A developmental biologist\, she investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell specification in development\, with a particular focus on the brain\, using zebrafish and other comparative animal models. \nThis event is organized by the Acoustical Society of America Los Angeles Chapter (www.larcasa.org). Attendance is free and space is limited.

SUMMARY:Salastina Happy Hour No. 133: Sounds Mysterious with Brian Lauritzen
DESCRIPTION:Brian Lauritzen leads our audience in our patented game of Guess The Composer. Though we’ve practiced every note\, we still don’t know who wrote the music. In this audience-favorite musical guessing game\, even the performers are in the dark about the composers’ identities. The audience joins us in sleuthing out the clues. Is that a hint of Haydn? A whiff of of Walton? A shade of Shostakovich? Or is it a total red herring? We’ll guess together\, laugh together\, and delight in the fact that classical music is more about curiosity and connection than the comfort of the familiar. (And yes: you’ve guessed the composers’ identities correctly more than we have.) This Happy Hour is free to attend.
