George Crumb’s “Makrokosmos Volume II” extends piano technique beyond the keys in a mythic exploration of the twelve zodiac signs. Alexander Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 10 is a “sonata of insects” that envisions the solar origin of these tiny creatures in a maze of trills and tremolos. Piano Spheres celebrates the centennial of one of the 20th century’s greatest composers with a marathon program stretching over two days in two venues. Major works to be performed include Crippled Symmetry\, For Bunita Marcus\, Patterns in a Chromatic Field\, and much more. Each began the intensive\, full-scholarship program in September 2025 and will attain a Master of Music in Jazz Performance degree from The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music – one of the nation’s top music schools – in spring 2027. DESCRIPTION:“System 6 is an adventurous contemporary ensemble whose music will appeal to lovers of the free jazz movement of the ’60s… their experience together is evident: not only are these musicians fluent improvisers\, but the ensemble playing is sturdy\, powerfully cohesive. Clatworthy on tenor\, Stout on trumpet\, and Sellars on trombone make for a very potent jazz sound.” (Brooks Geiken\, theartsfuse). \nBorn in England 1955\, Benn Clatworthy grew up in London. Active in the London music scene during the 1970’s\, he moved to Los Angeles in 1980 where he studied Saxophone\, Flute\, and Clarinet with Phil Sobel. In the late 80’s he was recommended for Horace Silver’s band\, and Horace in turn recommended Benn to discovery records\, resulting in his first CD release as a leader: “Thanks Horace”. \nIn addition to his work as a solo artist\, Benn leads a quartet as well as the band System 6. DESCRIPTION:Actions Speak Louder Inc. and the Wende Museum present a showing of a film about a man of integrity\, a lesson we all need. \n9th Circuit Cowboy: The Long Good Fight of Judge Harry Pregerson is the story of Judge Harry Pregerson who\, for almost half a century\, served on California’s famously liberal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and was known for placing his personal scruples over what he discounted as abstract legalities. “I looked upon being a judge\,” he said\, “as a chance to help as many people as I could through the law.” Growing up during the Depression in diverse East Los Angeles\, Harry enlisted in the Marines in World War II and served in the Pacific. In the bloody Battle for Okinawa\, he received a field commission to lieutenant after suffering severe gun shot wounds to his legs. After the war\, he went on to become a lawyer\, a district court judge and ultimately one of the most admired\, and sometimes scorned\, appellate judges in the United States: a champion for veterans\, the homeless\, the poor and the powerless. \nAfter a seated viewing of the documentary film\, Oscar winning director Terry Sanders\, Judge Dean Pregerson\, and Actions speak Louder Inc\, founder Bob Zaugh will conduct a Q&A.

Both celebrated and disparaged for his kitschy signature settings\, the “Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade rocketed to popularity in the ‘90s by marketing himself to American evangelicals and pitting himself against the elite art establishment. \nYet beneath the pristine public persona were demons that would drive him to alcoholism\, scandal\, and death from an overdose in 2012. After his passing\, Kinkade’s daughters uncovered a trove of unseen\, unexpectedly dark paintings\, a discovery that launched an investigation into their father’s true personality. \nThrough the voices of skeptical critics\, adoring fans\, and Kinkade’s closest friends and family\, ART FOR EVERYBODY digs deep into Kinkade’s life and work to elucidate the real man behind the persona. Accomplished editor Miranda Yousef’s directorial debut is an insightful documentary that peels back the layers of Kinkade’s facade\, delivering a portrait of a complex man divided by the same forces that continue to pull us apart as a nation. \nAcademy Award winner John Ridley will moderate a post-screening Q&A with director Miranda Yousef and producer Morgan Neville. His continual desire for expansion as an artist and his experimental ideas has allowed him to take on roles of a choreographer\, dancer\, performance artist\, director\, writer\, and filmmaker. His recent on-going project\, LITTERED MVMNTS\, has connected with millions of viewers around the world through social media and has given him opportunities to collaborate with brands such as Paloma Wool\, Harper Collective\, and H. Lorenzo. He has also been featured in articles such as Hyperallergic and Die Presse. Together\, we will honor the sacred act of turning what has been discarded into what is beloved. Through a ritual procession of formerly given-away clothes and items\, we celebrate the way one person’s orphaned belongings can become another’s chosen treasure. This is a practice of reimagining family\, of weaving new kinship through care\, creativity\, and collective imagination. \nAs choreographer holly johnston describes: \n“Our collaboration is an adoption process where we are joining together Responsive Body and CONTRA-TIEMPO to expand the family of artistic work. Mindfulness isn’t just for the cushion — it’s for the small\, ordinary moments that make up our days. \nSome weeks\, we’ll sit together in silence at the Wende Museum. Other times\, practice might take us outdoors for a gentle hike\, to a public event\, on a mindful shopping trip\, or even online via Zoom. Wherever we are\, the essence of practice remains the same: staying present\, open\, and kind. \nThis new L.A.-based sangha is rooted in curiosity\, ease\, and Dharma friendship. Together\, we’ll explore how to live with awareness and discover what unfolds when we meet life just as it is. We warmly invite you to join us — to sit\, to walk\, to laugh\, and to grow together on this path of practice. \nThese teachings are offered on a donation basis. SUMMARY:Helix Collective: L.A. Stories
DESCRIPTION:L.A. Stories brings together local poets\, writers\, composers\, and musicians to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Los Angeles. This music and storytelling show from Helix Collective creates vignettes within the city about surviving and thriving in L.A. We all share this city but it looks different from every vantage point. \nHelix Collective’s musicians including flutist Sarah Robinson\, oboist Phil Popham\, pianist Kathryn Eames\, and percussionist Tyler Stell narrate and perform this set of musical stories. These include poetry and stories from local authors as well as a collection of letters from the early 20th Century Los Angeles.
