SUMMARY:WIP 023
DESCRIPTION:WIP 023 features works in progress by Gurmukhi Desai Bevli & Felicia St. Cyr\, followed by a post-show talk back moderated by WIP alum Kevin Williamson. \nWhat is WIP? \nWIP is an artist-led\, work-in-progress performance platform co-founded by dance artists Kate Wallich\, Stephanie Zaletel\, and Belize Wilheim. Launched in 2023\, WIP was created to give choreographers and performance makers a “low-tech\, high-visibility” space to share evolving works with audiences\, fostering curiosity\, dialogue\, and critical exchange at every stage of development. \nThe format is simple: each WIP features two artists sharing up to 25 minutes of work-in-progress\, followed by a moderated post-show conversation. \nWIP’s mission is to provide a supportive and sustainable environment for artists to test new ideas\, receive meaningful feedback\, and catalyze experimentation within the Los Angeles dance and performance community. By centering progressive and innovative work that challenges convention\, WIP strengthens the local ecosystem and deepens connections between artists\, arts institutions\, and audiences. \nwww.wipla.info/#info

SUMMARY:Don't Blame Me\, I Voted for Helen Gahagan Douglas
DESCRIPTION:Written by Wendy Kout and Michele Willens \nStarring Wendie Malick\, Charles Shaughnessy\, Diedrich Bader and Charlie Adler \nToday’s political pundits are predicting the upcoming midterms will determine the life or death of our democracy. But in 1950 a California Senate race also changed the world. It was then that a young Richard Nixon falsely accused his opponent\, the beautiful\, three term liberal congresswoman and ex-Broadway and opera star\, Helen Gahagan Douglas\, of being a Communist. Nixon earned the name “Tricky Dick\,” Helen was dubbed the “Pink Lady.” He ascended to the Presidency… until Watergate. She was forgotten… until now. \nThe play is set in the past and the present\, in Hollywood and Washington D.C.\, and builds to that dirty\, dramatic Senate race while telling the cautionary personal tale of Helen\, a flawed and remarkable heroine. It also gives us the compelling love story of the entertainment world’s first activist couple. \nDon’t Blame Me\, I Voted for Helen Gahagan Douglas is a warning and call to action for the upcoming November midterms.

SUMMARY:The Bengali: An Evening of Film and the Power of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of film\, conversation\, and community at the Wende Museum as we explore the stories we inherit\, the identities we carry\, and the unexpected connections that shape our world. \nIn The Bengali\, named one of Nonfics’ Top 20 Documentaries\, director Kavery Kaul takes an American woman to India to uncover the past of her grandfather\, Shaik Mohamed Musa. He was one of the early group of men who arrived in the late nineteenth century and married African-American women. Her unlikely quest triggers a boldly different encounter between East and West. A personal search becomes a deeper journey into culture\, memory\, and identity\, breaking barriers and building bridges\, revealing how histories travel\, and families form across unexpected places. \nThe Bengali has inspired the #UnderOurSun impact campaign\, a digital storyteling movement that invites everyone to share their own cultural heritage and lived experience. Through in-person screenings\, lively panel discussions\, and digital storytelling\, the campaign sparks timely conversation about migration and belonging. \nThe Alliance of Women Film Journalists calls The Bengali “a lyrical and poetic documentary that shows how stories and presumptions can change\, forging connections that are rich and real — not just to the past\, but to the world at large.” \nProgram\n6:00 PM — Reception\n6:30 PM — Doors Open\n6:45 PM — Film Screening\n8:15 PM — Conversation & Audience Q&A \nFeaturing:Kavery Kaul\, Director\, The BengaliJulie Carmen\, Actress\, ProducerNajla Zaidi\, Director\, MPAC® Hollywood BureauModerated by: Lorraine Ali\, News and Culture Critic\, LA Times

SUMMARY:Jazz Refractions: Zeena Parkins How She Works + The Smudges
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Refractions present \n8pm The Smudges \nGenre defying compositions\, daring improvisations and electronically manipulated sounds; The Smudges are ‘cellist’ Maggie Parkins and violinist Jeff Gauthier. \n9pm Zeena Parkins How She Works – solo harp \nWith custom designed electronics\, guitar pedals\, bows\, bolts\, bells\, corks\, samples\, sponges and visuals\, the beginnings of a new solo project has emerged\, How She Works. \nThe music featured at Jazz Refractions is rooted in the jazz tradition of radical improvisation\, freedom\, and technical mastery. However\, once it passes through the Angel City’s lens\, it bends\, distorts\, and shatters into entirely new forms unrestricted by musical genres.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Men's Club
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. No experience with meditation or group work is required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nMore at tuesdaymensclub.com
