SUMMARY:The Eyes of Ghana: Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:From two-time Academy Award–winning director Ben Proudfoot\, The Eyes of Ghana (2025) follows 93-year-old filmmaker Chris Hesse\, the personal cinematographer to Ghana’s first president\, Kwame Nkrumah. As his eyesight fades\, Hesse races to preserve and repatriate a hidden archive of more than 1\,000 films documenting the birth of African independence in the 1950s and 1960s. Long unseen by the public\, these images have the potential to reshape the historical record of Ghana\, the African continent\, and the global story of decolonization. \nExecutive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama\, the film is both a portrait of a life’s work and a meditation on archives\, memory\, and the urgent task of safeguarding endangered historical materials. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation and audience Q&A with members of the filmmaking team. \nNana Adwoa Frimpong\, Producer\, is Vice President of Partnerships and Impact at Breakwater Studios\, where she develops strategies that connect documentary storytelling to public engagement and social impact. The Eyes of Ghana\, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival\, is her first feature documentary. \nGabriel Rivera\, Archival Producer\, is an Emmy Award–winning researcher whose work for Netflix\, HBO Max\, and Amazon Prime Video focuses on uncovering rare and historically significant materials that bring overlooked stories to light. \nSeating is first come\, first served. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Late entry is not permitted once the program begins. \nPresented in partnership with Breakwater Studios and Higher Ground.

SUMMARY:Go Clara Go: The Art of Creative Resistance | Screening
DESCRIPTION:During the 1970s\, the artist group Clara Mosch transformed the former socialist model city of Chemnitz\, then Karl-Marx-Stadt\, in the GDR into an avant-garde happening zone. Silent performances and plenary actions alternated with exuberant art festivals and collaborative works presented in the local Galerie Oben. Through interviews with the protagonists and archival sources\, including materials from the Getty Research Institute\, filmmaker Sylvie Kürsten sheds light on this extraordinary chapter in East German art history in her new documentary Go Clara Go: The Art of Creative Resistance (Germany\, 2025). \nFollowing the screening\, filmmaker Sylvie Kürsten will be joined in conversation with curator Isotta Poggi of the Getty Research Institute. Joes Segal\, the Wende Museum’s Chief Curator and Director of Programming\, will moderate the discussion. \nSylvie Kürsten is an independent cultural journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Berlin. Since 2011\, she has produced and directed documentaries navigating the relations between culture and society in former East Germany. In 2016\, she won the Grimme-Audience Award for her TV documentary Art and Crime The venus gone astray and has presented her works at major national and international film festivals. \nThis program is presented in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the German Currents Film Festival. \nImage: Drachen-Aktion beim Pleinair in Kolkwitz-Rudolstadt © 1986 Lindenau-Museum Altenburg / Archiv Ralf-Rainer Wasse

SUMMARY:Mr. Nobody Against Putin: Screening and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of Mr. Nobody Against Putin\, the Sundance-winning documentary that exposes how the Russian state reshapes childhood and citizenship through the classroom. \nAs Russia launches its full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, schools across the country become recruitment sites for the war. In a remote mining town\, a primary school teacher is tasked with filming “patriotic education” sessions meant to instill loyalty to the war. Instead\, he turns the camera toward the indoctrination of students\, capturing the pressure to conform and the quiet acts of dissent that survive inside the system. Shot undercover at great personal risk\, the film offers an unfiltered look at how propaganda operates on the most intimate level: the education of children. \nBefore the screening begins\, guests are invited to join a complimentary garden reception.

SUMMARY:Art for Everybody Screening
DESCRIPTION:You’ve seen his cozy cottages\, idyllic gardens\, and welcoming village streets on everything from canvas to commemorative plates. Both celebrated and disparaged for his kitschy signature settings\, the “Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade rocketed to popularity in the ‘90s by marketing himself to American evangelicals and pitting himself against the elite art establishment. \nYet beneath the pristine public persona were demons that would drive him to alcoholism\, scandal\, and death from an overdose in 2012. After his passing\, Kinkade’s daughters uncovered a trove of unseen\, unexpectedly dark paintings\, a discovery that launched an investigation into their father’s true personality. \nThrough the voices of skeptical critics\, adoring fans\, and Kinkade’s closest friends and family\, ART FOR EVERYBODY digs deep into Kinkade’s life and work to elucidate the real man behind the persona. Accomplished editor Miranda Yousef’s directorial debut is an insightful documentary that peels back the layers of Kinkade’s facade\, delivering a portrait of a complex man divided by the same forces that continue to pull us apart as a nation. \nAcademy Award winner John Ridley will moderate a post-screening Q&A with director Miranda Yousef and producer Morgan Neville. A light reception will begin at 7pm in the museum garden and resume after the program.

SUMMARY:Children in the Fire: Screening and Q&A with Director Evgeny Afineevsky
DESCRIPTION:SECOND SHOWING ADDED DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND \nSince launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022\, Russian leaders have imposed methods for undermining Ukraine’s future by targeting its children. Russian troops are regularly accused of abducting minors\, then forcing them into adoptions or captivity so they can be re-educated as Russian patriots. \nReturning to the streets where he filmed his Oscar-nominated documentary Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom\, director Evgeny Afineevsky invites survivors of Russia’s abductions and attacks to share their stories. \nChildren in the Fire is the collective war diary of resilient Ukrainians who witnessed the worst of humanity\, yet remain motivated young athletes\, performers and public servants. Through live-action footage and Ukrainian artists’ animation\, the documentary joins eight kids on international journeys to pursue their dreams. Each child embodies the promise of their homeland and the potential of a nonviolent world. \nAccess to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center outside of the museum’s normal hours is available through the garden gate from the parking lot. RSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission to the A-Frame Theater. Doors will open and seating will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of the program. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please note that doors will close promptly at the program’s start time and late entry will not be permitted.

SUMMARY:Dragonfly Eyes: A Film by Xu Bing
DESCRIPTION:What do surveillance cameras really see\, and what do we see when we watch their footage? \nJoin us for a rare screening of Dragonfly Eyes (2017)\, the groundbreaking debut feature by acclaimed artist Xu Bing. Using only publicly available surveillance footage from China\, where 700 million cameras silently record daily life\, Xu pieces together an unsettling and poetic narrative about a woman leaving a Buddhist temple to find her place in modern society. \nThe result blurs the line between fact and fiction\, ordinary and extraordinary\, asking us to reconsider the nature of truth and knowledge in an age of constant observation. \nOur Counter/Surveillance exhibition offers only a glimpse of the making of this work. This screening is a rare chance to experience the full film\, and to reflect on how images\, stripped of context\, shape what we think we know.
