SUMMARY:Wende Museum Spring 2026 Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Wende Museum presents the opening of its Spring 2026 exhibitions on Saturday\, April 25. \nExperience new work on view for the first time in the United States alongside a live performance which was subject of a recent censorship controversy. \nOpening:\nAnton Roland Laub: Mobile Churches in Ceaușescu’s Bucharest\nA photographic and archival study of churches lifted\, relocated\, and concealed under Romania’s socialist government\, exposing a largely unknown campaign of cultural erasure. \nIvana Dama: Breathing Alarms\nA guardhouse installation examining surveillance\, atmosphere\, and the politics of breath. \nContinuing:\nEnrique Martínez Celaya: The Sextant\nA large-scale installation that deals with memory\, exile\, and the inaccessibility of the past. \nSpecial performance premiere:\nElana Mann and Sharon Chohi Kim: Whirlwinds\, Tornadoes\, Basement\nA live work that emerges from a broader body of performance and sound-based practice focused on voice\, listening\, and collective expression. A related installation was recently removed by administrators at Pepperdine’s Weisman Museum after being deemed “political in nature\,” prompting artist withdrawals and the exhibition’s closure. Presented here in full\, the performance engages questions of speech\, silence\, and the conditions under which art is allowed to be heard. \nThe day unfolds across the museum campus with a curator-led tour\, opening remarks\, and a reception. \nSchedule\n10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Exhibitions on view\n12 p.m. | Curator-led exhibition tour\n2 p.m. | Opening remarks and reception\n3 p.m. | Performance in the A-Frame Theater

SUMMARY:Nawruz (Spring) Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Wende Museum is pleased to partner with the Aga Khan Museum and The Ismaili Council for the Western United States in organizing a fun-filled day of activities for the entire family at this celebration. \nThe festival of Nawruz coincides with the vernal equinox\, on the 20th of March — when the sun crosses the equator and equalizes day and night. In the Persian calendar\, this event marks the New Year\, and Nawruz\, the 21st of March\, is the ‘new day’ that marks the beginning of Spring. It is a day to offer gratitude for the bounties of life and to express renewed hope and optimism for the future. \nNawruz is celebrated by over three hundred million people in the Balkans\, the Caucasus\, Central and South Asia\, and by Iranians worldwide. It signals the transition from a dull and grey winter to a vibrant and colorful spring\, a promise of new life and abundance. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the delicate intertwining of nature and humanity\, one that sustains us and needs to be preserved. \nActivities include live musical and dance performances\, calligraphy workshop\, tile painting\, henna painting\, planting seeds\, button making\, creating greeting cards\, poetry recitations\, children’s egg painting\, and Persian tea and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Defiant Laughter: An Evening of Soviet Jewish Purim Spiels
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a staged reading of archival Purim spiel scripts shared within Soviet Jewish communities\, performed in newly translated English. These witty\, subversive works were originally passed hand-to-hand and performed in private apartments\, where Jewish life continued behind closed doors. \nPurim is a holiday celebrating survival and the triumph over oppression\, traditionally marked by humor\, costumes\, and spirited storytelling. In the USSR\, that spirit took on deeper meaning\, as communities preserved tradition through intimate\, often improvised performances in living rooms. \nThese spiels reflect that world—blending satire\, history\, and quiet resistance. Open to all audiences\, this event offers a unique chance to experience both the joy of Purim and the resilience of cultural life under constraint. \nAs the museum will be closed during this program\, please enter through the garden side gate\, which will open 30 minutes before the start time. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Digitization Day: Free Archival Digitization
DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, February 27th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: \nConsider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable USB-A-compatible storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. \nThe Wende offers free parking in the lot adjacent to the building. You will enter the front entrance of the Wende Museum and from there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Glorya Kaufman Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Ask Questions: \nI have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, participants must bring materials they would like to scan and a portable USB-A-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so it is wise to stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.

DESCRIPTION:A FREE immersive Valentine’s Day offering. \nStep into a Valentine’s Day experience unlike any other\, where love\, sound\, art\, and vibration invite connection\, presence\, play\, and yes\, more love. \nPresented by Sonic Unity\, My Sonic Valentine: Love Wrapped in Sound marks their West Coast debut\, with a gathering that reimagines Valentine’s Day beyond romance\, embracing self-love\, friendship\, and community through sound and art\, and unfolds its vision across the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Wende Museum. \nDoors open at 3:30pm and guests will be invited to move freely\, follow the sound\, and experience living art and soundscapes that unfold across the museum’s spaces. This is envisioned as an interactive sound-art journey\, an experience that blends stillness with mindful movement into the realm of dreamlike wandering gently through sound\, art and connection. \nIn the spirit of community and public art\, the Wende Museum is honored to welcome the NXT Art Foundation\, which will present their brilliant Attune 1.0\, a first-of-its-kind public art platform designed to connect Angelenos through coordinated sound and light-based works presented simultaneously across multiple locations. Attune 1.0\, presented by NXT Art Foundation and Arup and produced by Carmen Zella (Cofounder\, NXT Art Foundation and Creative Director\, NOW Art)\, will unfold across Los Angeles County at sunset on Valentine’s Day as part of a free\, family-friendly public art experience. \nAttune 1.0 will activate the garden space as a central feature\, inviting guests to bring picnic blankets or chairs and settle around a light-based installation as they experience a collective sound journey created by local artists to inspire connection and calm… \n…and AMPLIFY LOVE. \nAt the heart of the experience is a continuous sound bath flow in the museum’s theater\, where guests are invited to receive as much or as little sound as feels right—dipping in and out as they wish. You are welcome to lie down\, sit\, move quietly\, or simply listen as sound moves through the space. We ask that this space be held with care and mindfulness\, honoring it as a sacred environment for sound bathing. \nTHEATER | THE SOUND BATH SANCTUARY \nA curated progression of exceptional sound artists bathing you with healing sound \n4:00 PM – Isaac Sabu\nVibroacoustic frequencies and immersive sound healing \n5:00 PM – Anthony Profeta\n2025 Evergreen Award Winner for Best Sound Therapist in the USA\, often referred to as “The Mozart of Sound” \n6:00 PM – Sandy Duarte\nStage 4 Cancer Survivor whose sound was born in chemo. Experience Valentine’s Day as a moment of self-love\, friendship\, community\, and collective resonance. \nABOUT SONIC UNITY \nSonic Unity is a collective devoted to exploring sound as a universal language for healing\, connection\, and collective resonance—where love is the language beyond words. Their work brings together ancient and contemporary vibrational expressions through sound\, art\, and technology to create immersive experiences that support nervous system regulation\, emotional clarity\, embodied presence\, and community gathering. \nSonic Unity was co-founded by wellness and creative artist Sandy Duarte and wellness entrepreneur Melissa Rosen with the mission to foster coherence within the self\, between individuals\, and across communities through intentional sound and vibratory experiences. \nSandy’s sound practice was born during her journey through chemotherapy as a Stage 4 cancer patient\, where sound became a source of calm\, grounding\, and inner peace. That lived experience informs the depth\, care\, and intention behind every Sonic Unity offering. \nThis Valentine’s Day gathering marks the West Coast debut of Sonic Unity’s immersive sound work\, following an acclaimed multi-day event during Miami Art Week featuring over 25 sound facilitators of various genres in collaboration for continuous sound programming. \nAs founders of this movement\, we leave you with both our ethos to ponder with joy and possibility. \n“The power of love’s sound is for everyone.” – Sandy Duarte\n“Listening is love.” – Melissa Rosen

SUMMARY:Otis College True Stories Student Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The best way to learn history is to listen to the stories of the people who have lived it. Otis College of Art and Design students interviewed community elders who have stories to tell. Through these interviews\, students created original books that share some of these life stories and the students’ artwork in response. \nJoin us for a program in the A-Frame Theater as the Otis students present their works and share highlights from the project. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd.
