SUMMARY:Bauhaus | Beyond the Surface: Dimensional Thinking on Paper
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop introduces key ideas from the Bauhaus by exploring how dimension emerges from simple materials. Participants begin with the 1D line\, move to the 2D plane through drawing and cutting\, and transform flat surfaces into 3D structures using folding techniques inspired by foundational Bauhaus exercises. Paper is treated not just as a surface for drawing but as a structural material whose strength\, flexibility\, and resistance could be revealed through various techniques – adhering to the Bauhaus idea that materiality meant understanding and honoring the inherent qualities of materials. Through strategic cuts\, bends\, and structural manipulation\, paper becomes volume\, tension\, and space. Finally\, participants activate their forms through movement or light (a mobile phone light will do)  introducing time as a fourth dimension and expanding static geometry into a spatial experience. \nThis program is part of the Wende Bauhaus series\, in which local artists lead hands-on classes inspired by the Bauhaus school’s learning-by-doing philosophy and its spirit of experimentation\, play\, and discovery. \nAbout the teaching artist: Minna Philips is a contemporary artist from India\, living in Los Angeles. Her architectural drawings explore spaces as it relates to our bodies and perception. Minna’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are in private and public collections\, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. One of her works\, as part of the Moon Gallery project based in the Netherlands\, will eventually find a permanent place on the Moon in 2026. \nAs the museum will be closed during this program\, please enter through the garden side gate\, which will open 30 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Bauhaus | Repetition\, Reordering\, and Rearrangement
DESCRIPTION:Designer and Black Mountain College scholar Michael Beggs leads a workshop exploring rearrangements\, a family of collage and material exercises which Josef Albers developed at the Bauhaus and both broadened and refined at Black Mountain College. Participants will sample a few different rearrangement and reordering approaches\, see examples from Albers’s classes\, and explore the larger constellation of works using this technique by a variety of artists from the Bauhaus to the present day. \nThis program is part of the Wende Bauhaus series\, in which local artists lead hands-on classes inspired by the Bauhaus school’s learning-by-doing philosophy and its spirit of experimentation\, play\, and discovery. \nAbout the teaching artist: Michael Beggs is a designer\, scholar\, and multidisciplinary artist. An expert on Black Mountain College\, Beggs was formerly on the curatorial staff at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation and has written extensively about both Alberses\, the Bauhaus\, and Black Mountain College. In 2023 he co-authored the book Weaving at Black Mountain College: Anni Albers\, Trude Guermonprez\, and Their Students with fellow Black Mountain scholar Julie J. Thomson\, which served as the catalogue to an exhibition of the same name at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville\, NC. He works as a designer at Johnston Marklee\, an LA-based architecture firm. \nAs the museum will be closed during this program\, please enter through the garden side gate\, which will open 30 minutes before the start time. Doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Bauhaus | The Shape-Shifting Forms of the Miura Pattern
DESCRIPTION:Learn to fold the Miura pattern and its various forms with artist Jeff Morrical. The pattern forms the basis of much of the artist’s sculptural work and within a few variations and combinations on the theme can create a wide variety of results.  Attendees will first be walked through tutorials on the pattern and can then combine and apply what they have learned in their own creative process to create a finished sculpture of their own. \nThis program is part of the Wende Bauhaus series\, in which local artists lead hands-on classes inspired by the Bauhaus school’s learning-by-doing philosophy and its spirit of experimentation\, play\, and discovery. \nAbout the teaching artist: The work of LA-based artist Jeff Morrical incorporates single-sheet paper sculptures shaped by folds and gravity. From many years working in the world of architecture\, finding form\, structure and pattern in everyday materials has always been a driving force in his work. While his artwork generally falls into the world of sculpture\, the pieces can become canvas\, costuming and props for movement and performance\, toys for play\, screens for projection – abundant possibilities in one of the world’s most ubiquitous and humble materials. He’s now on a mission to unlock the geometric properties latent in every sheet of material\, one fold at a time.

SUMMARY:S.U.T@LA – Vipassana Meditation Practice Group
DESCRIPTION:Practice Isn’t Just on the Cushion — It’s Wherever Life Takes Us \nOur practice is inspired by the teachings of Sayadaw U Tejaniya (S.U.T)\, which invite us to bring wise awareness into every part of life. Mindfulness isn’t just for the cushion — it’s for the small\, ordinary moments that make up our days. \nSome weeks\, we’ll sit together in silence at the Wende Museum. Other times\, practice might take us outdoors for a gentle hike\, to a public event\, on a mindful shopping trip\, or even online via Zoom. Wherever we are\, the essence of practice remains the same: staying present\, open\, and kind. \nThis new L.A.-based sangha is rooted in curiosity\, ease\, and Dharma friendship. Together\, we’ll explore how to live with awareness and discover what unfolds when we meet life just as it is. We warmly invite you to join us — to sit\, to walk\, to laugh\, and to grow together on this path of practice. \nPlease note we are holding Q&A session from 5PM. Q&A sessions are for continuing students only. Please contact me if you are interested in joining.

SUMMARY:Bauhaus | RAW! CLAY! : Exploring Unfired Clay as a Sculptural Medium
DESCRIPTION:Clay is beloved for its messy\, joyous immediacy\, and\, of course\, for the reward of watching an item transform through firing from clay to ceramic. But many artists work with unfired clay as a way to embrace the material’s fragility and to explore its symbolic associations with fragility\, ephemerality and transformation. \nIn this workshop\, participants will honor the Bauhaus spirit of learning by doing and embrace the material possibilities and limitations of unfired clay as a sculptural material in its own right. They will look at some examples of artists — historic and contemporary — who work with unfired clay\, and they will go over some simple handbuilding techniques to get everyone up and running. Some alternative methods of construction and finishing the pieces will be introduced as an option for participants to explore. \nThis program is part of the Wende Bauhaus series\, in which local artists lead hands-on classes inspired by the Bauhaus school’s learning-by-doing philosophy and its spirit of experimentation\, play\, and discovery. \nAbout the teaching artist: Hallie McNeill is an artist and writer currently based in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from the Department of Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work examines how desire and aspiration inform our relationships with language and material culture\, particularly through acts of self-representation. Focusing on the fragility and arbitrariness of organizational systems\, she traces these dynamics both literally—through manufactured conveniences like containers and baskets—and symbolically—through language and other cultural codes. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles at Durden and Ray\, Human Resources\, Sow & Tailor\, and Flux Factory\, and at my pet ram in New York. Her writing has been published in BOMB Magazine and The Rib. She has taught at Pratt Institute\, Pomona College\, and Scripps College.

SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nWe encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt\, a pair of jeans\, or any textile you’re ready to transform\, repair\, or experiment with. \nEach session is free\, open to all skill levels\, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch\, alter\, repair\, and imagine new forms of expression. \nSCHEDULE \n“HAND” BOOK MADE OF CLOTH \nMarch 8\, 2026 \nInspired by the beautiful “handbook” by artist Ruth Katzenstein Souza currently on view at Art Division in MacArthur Park\, we will make a cloth “book” that is illustrated with embroidery\, drawing\, embellishments\, collage\, etc. Perhaps your “book” is a handkerchief that reveals its story when it is unfolded; or perhaps yours will be more of a scroll than a book\, one that unfurls\, or perhaps yours will unravel as it is read. Join us! \nSee images of Katzenstein Souza’s book on her website: \nhttps://www.ruthkatzensteinsouza.com/handbook \nACCORDION BOOK \nMarch 15\, 2026 \nModeled after the pilgrimage temple and shrine stamp books of Japan (called goshuin)\, we will make simple accordion books that can be embellished on the outside and the inside with collage\, writing\, cloth\, etc. Working with our abundant stash of discarded materials\, we will make accordion books of various sizes and for various purposes. Will your accordion book be for recording a spiritual pilgrimage? Or perhaps to hold your favorite recipes\, or your favorite poems? Perhaps your accordion book will be an unfolding love letter\, to another person or the squirrel who lives in your favorite tree. \nPATCHES! \nMarch 22\, 2026 \nWe will begin our workshop with a visit to the Wende Museum archives to see the beautiful handmade patches in the Soviet Hippie collection. Using felt as our substrate\, we will embroider\, collage\, embellish\, and appliqué designs to make a patch to use to cover up a rip or tear\, or perhaps to communicate an idea or concept. \nFor an extra special weekend\, come to the museum on Saturday\, March 21 as well to enjoy the Soviet Hippie Archives Open House. You’ll come away inspired\, I’m certain of it! \nFINISH IT! CLINIC \nMarch 29\, 2026 \nToday we will finish up projects we’re working on\, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays\, or other projects that have been lingering in your studio or drawer waiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you\, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials\, if your project requires them. If this is your first time coming to the workshop\, you are welcome to work on a past Samizdat Sunday project. Perhaps you’ll make a series of mail art collage postcards\, or perhaps you’ll sew a secret pocket or message into your favorite shirt. Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende. \nAbout the teaching artist \nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. SUMMARY:Tea Dances at the Glorya Kaufman Community Center
DESCRIPTION:The Wende Museum’s Tea Dance series invites you to move\, mingle\, and unwind through the joyful rhythm of social dance. Hosted in the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, each session features different dance traditions\, ranging from Argentine tango to vintage swing\, led by local artists and dance instructors. No experience or partner required. \nTea dances originated in early 20th-century Britain and America as daytime socials\, often held in hotels and ballrooms\, offering live music\, light refreshments\, and a welcoming space for community connection. Revived in the queer communities of mid-century America\, the tradition evolved into a vibrant celebration of expression and belonging. \nIn that spirit\, our Sunday Tea Dances offer a space to unplug\, connect\, and move together. These afternoons are for everyone: curious beginners\, practiced dancers\, and people just looking to enjoy good music and warm company. \nCome for the class\, stay for the social\, and rediscover the art of togetherness. \nFree and open to all. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. \nMarch 22: Groove and Step\nThis is an all levels dance class that captures certain elements of traditional southern line dance and hip hop choreography simultaneously! The class will involve choreography however\, there is still space for individual creativity and unique dance expression. Groove and Step cultivates energy\, connection\, and JOY! After an intial period to mix and mingle\, an hour-long class will begin at 3:30\, after which time\, attendees will be invited to share their own line dances with the group during the open session until 6:00 pm! \nAbout the instructor: Ronnie Martin is a professional dancer/choreographer from New Orleans\, Louisiana. He has been a part of two major dance companies\, So Real Dance Co. and Texas Southern Dance Co. and has been teaching all levels of hip hop choreography for the past 10 years. Once he relocated to LA he developed a love and passion for fitness which encouraged him to create his own fun and effective way to have the best of both worlds (Dance and Fitness). He has been teaching hip hop cardio classes for 7 years now and line dance classes for 5 years ! He believes that Dance fitness is great way to get active as well decompress. His goal is to constantly create spaces for the advancement of physical and mental health in a creative way! \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. The garden side gate will open 30 minutes before the start time and is available for ADA access and check-in. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende. \nMINI MOON BAG \nApril 5\, 2026 \nTo kick off a month of space exploration-related projects\, we will make mini moon bags modeled after the small pouches seen in the Wende’s Soviet Hippie Collection. Included in the collection is a tailor’s book\, with clippings\, drawings\, and written ideas for clothing modifications and accessories\, including small pouch-like bags. Your bag might hang around your neck\, or attach to your belt\, or be a separate little bag that is held in your purse. Or perhaps your bag is not a bag at all\, but rather a pocket attached to an existing garment that can be opened (or not). We use discarded materials for Samizdat Sundays that are added to and taken away from each week. If you have something special in mind\, please bring it! Otherwise\, be open to the surprises found in our stash of materials. \nAfter our workshop\, check out the Nawruz (Spring) Festival happening around the museum grounds beginning at 1 pm. There will be music\, dance\, crafts\, poetry\, and family activities to welcome spring and the Persian New Year. \nLETTERS TO OUTER SPACE \nApril 12\, 2026 \nThe has a wonderful collection of artifacts related to the mid-century explorations of outer space. The arms race of the Cold War extended to the skies\, as the Soviet Union and the United States raced each other to the moon. Many astronauts have commented on the profound experience of traveling to outer space and seeing our planet floating beside them. The celestial sphere we inhabit has long fascinated and entranced\, across cultures and across time. \nToday\, we will write a “letter” to outer space. This letter might be made of vintage magazines of the moon landing era\, or it might be made of fabric\, or perhaps it will be made of other materials. The idea for a “letter” came after I found a space-era magazine and a stack of oddly large letter envelopes. The envelopes are the proportion of a regular letter envelope but they’re extra large\, just like our universe! You’re invited to fill these envelopes with your dreams and messages to outer space. \nLETTERS TO PLANET EARTH \nApril 19\, 2026 \nAs we did last week\, we will once again make “letters\,” but this time for our home\, Earth. Your letter does not have to be on paper. It does not have to include words. A letter is a correspondence and messages come in many forms. Perhaps your letter is a direction for an action\, like Yoko Ono’s “MAILING PIECE II” from her seminal book\, Grapefruit: “Send the sound of one hundred suns rising at once\,” or perhaps your “letter” is an image or a texture that evokes a feeling. \nFINISH IT! CLINIC \nApril 26\, 2026 \nToday we will finish up projects we’re working on\, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays\, or other projects that have been lingering in our studios or drawer swaiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you\, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials\, if your project requires them.
