The poem may be the impetus for a collage made of vintage magazines or discarded textiles\, or perhaps will be embroidered on a shirt or sealed up in an envelope. Join us! \nNECKLACE A LA AZAZELLO \nJune 14\, 2026 \nIn honor of the Soviet Hippie and nonconformist Azazello (Anatoly Kalabin)\, whose extensive archive is in the Wende Museum’s collection\, we will make a necklace made of discarded materials. We will begin the workshop with a slideshow of the archive to get a sense of the artistic vision of Azazello. His journals are full of drawings\, doodles\, and poetry. Perhaps your necklace will feature an Azazello-style image or poem\, or perhaps yours will appear blank and without decoration\, but will hold a secret decoration away from public view. \nSECRET MESSAGE BRACELET \nJune 21\, 2026 \nToday we will make a bracelet that contains a secret message. Perhaps this message is made of symbols or objects\, a cryptic message that only you understand; or perhaps it is made of embroidered or written words that are understandable\, but are on a part of the bracelet that isn’t immediately visible. The bracelet may be designed to be noticed or designed to be worn in secret. \nTURN AN OLD TEE INTO A SHOPPING BAG \nJune 28\, 2026 \nIn this workshop\, we will turn an old tee into a shopping bag\, modeled after the plastic bags that are ubiquitous in our Age of Plastic. This bag can be gusseted or have a simple hem or even be hem-less\, tied together in a fringe-like manner. Perhaps your bag will rock whatever message was on the tee originally\, or perhaps you’ll embellish the bag with patches and embroidery. The choice is yours! \nAbout the teaching artist \nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. DESCRIPTION:Participants must bring their own yoga mat\, and are encouraged to also bring a towel to pad their knees and yoga blocks if desired. \nJoin our new weekly yoga session; all experience levels welcome! Yoga is a practice that builds strength\, flexibility\, and focus while calming the mind and restoring balance to the body. Through mindful movement and breathwork\, it supports physical health\, reduces stress\, and cultivates a deeper sense of well-being that carries into daily life. Each class offers a chance to reset\, recharge\, and reconnect. \nKate is a certified yoga instructor with teaching experience at Cliffs of Id\, Iconic Fitness\, Red Diamond Yoga\, Downtown Women’s Center\, and Stoneview Nature Center. Her classes combine gentle warm-ups\, smooth flow sequences of strength-building poses\, and restorative cool-downs\, creating an accessible practice that leaves students grounded\, energized\, and renewed. \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. DESCRIPTION:The #Standing4BlackGirls Music and Poetry concert festival will feature original multi-genre music and spoken word performances by Black female-identifying and queer artists. Headlined by internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter-guitarist Malina Moye\, the event will raise awareness about disproportionate gender-based violence experienced by Black women and girls in L.A. County and beyond\, while providing powerful testimony to the lived experiences and creativity of local and national Black women artists\, musicians\, and BIPOC community allies. This event is sponsored by the Women’s Leadership Project\, a Black feminist mentoring\, advocacy and civic engagement organization based in Los Angeles\, in partnership with Black Skeptics Los Angeles\, with generous funding made possible by the Culver City Cultural Affairs Commission and Sony Music. Featured musicians include Mystical Joyride\, Naomi Wilson\, Berklee College of Music\, Maurock Music Academy and AMPA Hamilton HS youth. \nDoors open at 3pm. Join us! \nNECKLACE A LA AZAZELLO \nJune 14\, 2026 \nIn honor of the Soviet Hippie and nonconformist Azazello (Anatoly Kalabin)\, whose extensive archive is in the Wende Museum’s collection\, we will make a necklace made of discarded materials. We will begin the workshop with a slideshow of the archive to get a sense of the artistic vision of Azazello. His journals are full of drawings\, doodles\, and poetry. Perhaps your necklace will feature an Azazello-style image or poem\, or perhaps yours will appear blank and without decoration\, but will hold a secret decoration away from public view. \nSECRET MESSAGE BRACELET \nJune 21\, 2026 \nToday we will make a bracelet that contains a secret message. Perhaps this message is made of symbols or objects\, a cryptic message that only you understand; or perhaps it is made of embroidered or written words that are understandable\, but are on a part of the bracelet that isn’t immediately visible. The bracelet may be designed to be noticed or designed to be worn in secret. \nTURN AN OLD TEE INTO A SHOPPING BAG \nJune 28\, 2026 \nIn this workshop\, we will turn an old tee into a shopping bag\, modeled after the plastic bags that are ubiquitous in our Age of Plastic. This bag can be gusseted or have a simple hem or even be hem-less\, tied together in a fringe-like manner. Perhaps your bag will rock whatever message was on the tee originally\, or perhaps you’ll embellish the bag with patches and embroidery. The choice is yours! \nAbout the teaching artist \nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. SUMMARY:Digitization Day: Free Archival Digitization
DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, May 29th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: Consider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. Please make sure your storage device is in working condition and has enough space to store your new scans. \nWhen you arrive\, enter through the front of the Wende Museum. From there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Glorya Kaufman Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Asked Questions: I have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, you must bring materials you would like to scan and a portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so we recommend you stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.
