DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. SUMMARY:Afro-Contemporary Workshop with Bernard Brown/bbmoves & Defacto X
DESCRIPTION:Fast-paced and educational\, this Afro-Contemporary dance technique class will challenge participants to engage body\, mind\, and spirit\, learn movement phrases\, push beyond “technique\,” and to explore their own individual performance choices throughout. Focusing on breath\, alignment\, rhythm and articulation\, this contemporary movement experience will incorporate many influences including Africanist movement technologies\, postmodern aesthetics\, and modern & contemporary dance techniques with a distinct emphasis on the foundational Katherine Dunham technique. Class will have live DJ accompaniment by DeFacto X. \nBio: \nBernard Brown is an award-winning Los Angeles-based performer\, choreographer\, arts activist\, and educator who situates their work at the intersection of Blackness\, Queerness\, and belonging. With an extensive performing career\, Bernard now serves as Executive Artistic Director of Bernard Brown/bbmoves – a social justice dance company\, choreographing for stage\, specific sites\, film\, and opera presented globally. Brown has received invitations\, residencies and commissions from On The Boards (Seattle)\, The Getty Museum (Los Angeles)\, the Centre de Développement Chorégraphique la Termitière (Burkina Faso)\, Dance Italia (Italy)\, The Music Center (Los Angeles)\, The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (Los Angeles)\, Dance Mission Theater (San Francisco)\, danceBox (Japan)\, Johns Hopkins University\, National Immigration Law Center\, California African American Museum\, among others. Brown conducts lectures\, workshops\, and master classes internationally\, namely in Korea\, Panama\, Israel\, Burkina Faso\, Canada\, Puerto Rico\, Malta\, and Brazil\, and across the US various educational institutions and community-centered organizations. A first-generation college graduate\, Brown earned his MFA from University of California\, Los Angeles and BFA from Purchase College. He is an Assistant Professor of Dance at UC San Diego\, a Certified Katherine Dunham Technique Instructor\, and a California Arts Council Established Artist Fellow. The Los Angeles Times has called him “…the incomparable Bernard Brown…” \nThis workshop will take place in the A-Frame Theater at the Wende Museum Community Center. DESCRIPTION:The third installment of The Future of History series\, presented through the Meyer and Renee Luskin Public History Program at the Wende in conjunction with the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy. \nHistory does not only live in books and classrooms. It lives in museums\, libraries\, and archives\, where institutions work to keep the past within reach of everyone. That work now faces real threats: growing indifference and inattention\, misinformation and disinformation\, bold revisionism\, and the rising specter of artificial intelligence as the final arbiter of historical truth. \nThis conversation will feature renowned leaders of local and national institutions committed to imparting historical knowledge to a wide public. What are the challenges of the current political\, cultural\, and technological moment? Can the work of producing reliable and meaningful historical knowledge weather the storm? \nStephen Aron is President and CEO of the Autry Museum of the American West and Professor of History\, Emeritus\, at UCLA. A historian of frontiers\, borderlands\, and the American West\, he has long worked to bridge academic and public history. \nAnthea M. Hartig is the Elizabeth MacMillan Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History\, the first woman to hold the post since the museum opened in 1964. An award-winning public historian\, she previously led the California Historical Society. \nJessie Kornberg is President and CEO of the Skirball Cultural Center\, which she has led since 2020. She came to the role after two decades in civil rights and public-interest law\, including as CEO of the legal aid organization Bet Tzedek. \nDavid N. Myers (moderator) is Distinguished Professor of History at UCLA and served as founding director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy (2017-2026). He convenes The Future of History series. \nTawny Paul (opening remarks) is director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy and a social and economic historian of Britain and the Atlantic World. Her public history work focuses on collaborative history-making and reaching wide audiences. \nAbout the Meyer and Renee Luskin Public History Program at the Wende: This series is made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Meyer and Renee Luskin\, visionary philanthropists whose support has advanced groundbreaking research and community engagement across Los Angeles and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, May 29th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: Consider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. Please make sure your storage device is in working condition and has enough space to store your new scans. \nWhen you arrive\, enter through the front of the Wende Museum. From there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Wende Museum Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Wende Museum Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Asked Questions: I have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, you must bring materials you would like to scan and a portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so we recommend you stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.
