SUMMARY:Photographing the War in Ukraine with Mark Neville
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Mark Neville has lived in Ukraine since 2020 and stayed in Kyiv through four years of war. He co-founded Postcode Ukraine\, a charity that drives humanitarian aid to frontline towns. On every trip he photographs the people he meets\, and those photographs became his books. \nNeville has spent his career asking what a photograph is for. He works closely with the communities he shoots\, and he often puts the finished work back in their hands. His books travel as tools. He mailed Stop Tanks with Books to diplomats\, journalists\, and politicians two weeks before the full invasion began. He sends Diary of a Volunteer out one copy at a time\, asks each reader to live with it\, then has it collected and passed on. \nJoes Segal\, Chief Curator at the Wende Museum\, talks with Neville about what a camera can do in a war. \nThe program takes place in the A-Frame Theater at the Wende Museum’s Community Center. Seating is first come\, first served. \nBio\nMark Neville is a British artist based in Kyiv who works across art\, activism\, and documentary photography. He has had solo exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh\, the Imperial War Museum in London\, and The Photographers’ Gallery in London. His books include Stop Tanks with Books\, Battle Against Stigma\, and Diary of a Volunteer.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditation. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Wende Museum Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve. Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

SUMMARY:Homecoming\, a staged reading
DESCRIPTION:“Homecoming” is a play by Steven Vargas that has been workshopped throughout LA and will have its official public reading. \nAbout the Play:\nA father sneaks another woman into the family home. \nHours later\, his son sneaks in his secret boyfriend. \nThe only one to catch them both is a grandmother with Alzheimer’s. \n‘Homecoming’ follows the Torres family as their well-kept secrets become liabilities and threaten the life they’ve built together under the same roof. Each member must decide whether the future they want is possible inside the home they know or if they must leave for a new one. ‘Homecoming’ questions our definition of love and depicts how our secrets shape us to be our best (or worst) selves. \nDirected by Simon J.O. Martin\nPerformed by Gabriel Montoya\, Lauren Curet\, Steven Vargas\, Jennifer Rosas\, Margarita Franco\, Peren Yesilyurt\, Luis Galilei\, and Viveka Garza Gómez

SUMMARY:The Future of History in the Public Sphere
DESCRIPTION:Program update: Anthea Hartig is no longer able to appear. Justin Jampol\, our founder and executive director\, will take her place on the panel. The program is on as scheduled and is sold out. \nThe third installment of The Future of History series\, presented through the Meyer and Renee Luskin Public History Program at the Wende in conjunction with the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy. \nHistory does not only live in books and classrooms. It lives in museums\, libraries\, and archives\, where institutions work to keep the past within reach of everyone. That work now faces real threats: growing indifference and inattention\, misinformation and disinformation\, bold revisionism\, and the rising specter of artificial intelligence as the final arbiter of historical truth. \nThis conversation will feature renowned leaders of local and national institutions committed to imparting historical knowledge to a wide public. What are the challenges of the current political\, cultural\, and technological moment? Can the work of producing reliable and meaningful historical knowledge weather the storm? \nStephen Aron is President and CEO of the Autry Museum of the American West and Professor of History\, Emeritus\, at UCLA. A historian of frontiers\, borderlands\, and the American West\, he has long worked to bridge academic and public history. \nAnthea M. Hartig is the Elizabeth MacMillan Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History\, the first woman to hold the post since the museum opened in 1964. An award-winning public historian\, she previously led the California Historical Society. \nJessie Kornberg is President and CEO of the Skirball Cultural Center\, which she has led since 2020. She came to the role after two decades in civil rights and public-interest law\, including as CEO of the legal aid organization Bet Tzedek. \nDavid N. Myers (moderator) is Distinguished Professor of History at UCLA and served as founding director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy (2017-2026). He convenes The Future of History series. \nTawny Paul (opening remarks) is director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy and a social and economic historian of Britain and the Atlantic World. Her public history work focuses on collaborative history-making and reaching wide audiences. \nAbout the Meyer and Renee Luskin Public History Program at the Wende: This series is made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Meyer and Renee Luskin\, visionary philanthropists whose support has advanced groundbreaking research and community engagement across Los Angeles and beyond. Through their commitment to education\, policy innovation\, and public history\, the Luskins have transformed institutions such as UCLA\, where the Luskin Center for History and Policy is pioneering efforts to apply historical analysis to contemporary challenges. Their dedication to fostering knowledge and civic dialogue ensures that history remains a vital resource in shaping a more just and informed society. \nAs the Wende’s galleries will be open during this program\, you may enter through the front doors of the museum. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nWe encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt\, a pair of jeans\, or any textile you’re ready to transform\, repair\, or experiment with. \nEach session is free\, open to all skill levels\, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch\, alter\, repair\, and imagine new forms of expression. \nJoin us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nAugust 2: I am HERE. Today\, we will make a piece that declares we are here\, in this time and space. We will look at the work of On Kawara\, Tehching Hsieh\, Sho Shibuya and JB Daniel\, artists who have made a practice of documenting their days as they lived them. Sometimes these works are incredibly simple\, like the date/time works of On Kawara or the daily sky photos of JB Daniel; sometimes they are more complicated\, like the beautiful paintings Sho Shibuya has made on the front cover of the daily New York Times since the Covid lockdown. What will you make to declare “I am here\,” to document your experience today? Will you begin with our latitude/longitude? The time on your smartphone? Or will you begin with a memory or a feeling or a color? Your work can be a collage or a drawing or a textile\, or perhaps a combination of all three. \nAugust 9: Time Capsule. There are time capsules being prepared across the country in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (you can read about the 50-state one here: https://america250.org/time-capsule/contents/). These capsules will be buried\, sent into outer space\, opened early and perhaps lost for good. Many time capsules are PR stunts\, but as my friend archaeologist Shannon Dawdy proposed in her Chronoscope Substack newsletter recently (https://shannonleedawdy.substack.com/p/so-whats-in-your-time-capsule)\, “we use time capsules to try to understand — or to assert — what this present moment is all about and to project ourselves into the future.” Today we will make an object for a theoretical time capsule. Perhaps you really will send yours into the future by burying your object or adding it to a local time capsule\, or perhaps your time capsule is conceptual rather than physical. What object would you like to make for the future? \nAugust 16: The Time-Keeper Appliqué/Embellishment. Have you met someone who has tattoos that mark a period in their life (or do you yourself have such a tattoo)? Throughout human history\, people have embellished their bodies and their clothing to reflect their lives as they lived them. Soldiers wear medals and patches that declare aspects of their service and training; tattoos and scarring may document rites of passage and other transitions; backpacks and jean jackets may be decorated with patches and pins from festivals\, camps\, schools\, travels\, etc. In today’s workshop\, we will add an applique or embellishment to a favorite piece of clothing\, bag\, or other object\, as a reminder of this time of our lives. Perhaps you will begin by making a decorated patch; perhaps you will move straight into embroidering your object directly; or perhaps your embellishment will be hidden from view\, only known to you. Bring a textile (or two) to play with — a canvas bag\, a shirt\, a pair of pants\, a bandana — whatever you would like to transform into a time keeper. \nAugust 23: Hidden Pocket. Today we will reprise a popular workshop from last summer: the hidden pocket. Hidden pockets have been used for millennia to hide\, conceal\, and keep safe objects that the wearer does not want others to see (at least not when they’re walking around town). During the Soviet Era\, hidden pockets in large overcoats were used to transport handwritten Samizdat. In the Iron Age\, a woman who lived in modern day Denmark wore a cloak with a secret pocket sewn closed (she is known as the “Huldremose Woman.”) that contained small objects that have been described by archaeologists as talismans and charms. Today we will sew a hidden pocket into a piece of clothing (and perhaps make an object or two to keep in the pocket as well)\, or make a small pouch that can be worn around our necks and hidden in our shirts\, or around our waists and hidden in our pants. Perhaps your hidden pocket is visible from the outside\, even if it’s contents are not\, or perhaps your hidden pocket is truly hidden from everyone but you. What will you keep in your pocket? \nAugust 30: Finish It Clinic. Today\, we will finish up projects. If you don’t have anything to finish\, don’t despair! Come and I will give you a project from a past workshop to do during our time together. \nAbout the teaching artist \nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Wende Museum Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot. This gate will be opened approximately 15 minutes prior to the program.

A member of SCBWI and board director at the German Academy for Children’s Literature\, she divides her time between Frankfurt and Los Angeles\, where she runs a real estate company\, supports arts institutions like the Wende Museum\, and continues to explore her family’s history\, including her grandfather’s role in the 1953 uprising on Stalin Allee. \nADA access to the Wende Museum’s Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot; this gate will be opened approximately 30 minutes before the program.

SUMMARY:The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp | Cinema Under Pressure
DESCRIPTION:Cinema Under Pressure is a Monday night film series at The Wende Museum. It explores the struggles over what audiences are permitted to see. Each screening is paired with a discussion featuring a guest expert. \nThis month’s film is The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)\, written\, produced\, and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The story follows British officer Clive Candy across forty years of war\, peace\, and love. His closest friend is a German officer. \nWinston Churchill learned of the production in 1942 and asked his ministers to find a way to stop it. The War Office refused to lend the filmmakers military support. Once the film was finished\, Churchill tried to block its export. Government reviewers found no reason to suppress it\, and the film opened in London in June 1943. American distributors cut it anyway. Later prints ran barely half the original length and dropped the flashback structure that gives the story its shape. The full version was restored in 1983 and is now regarded as one of the finest British films ever made. \nFilmmaker Kevin Macdonald joins us for a discussion after the screening. Macdonald is Pressburger’s grandson and wrote his biography. He won an Academy Award for the documentary One Day in September\, and his films include Touching the Void\, The Last King of Scotland\, and Whitney. He will be joined in conversation by Aidan Victor\, The Wende Museum’s film curator. \nThis program is free. RSVPing to this free program does not guarantee admission. Seating is first come\, first served.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:In September\, our regular Mindfulness session with Christiane Wolf will be replaced by a Sound Bath led by Kris Matsuoka. Christiane returns on Wednesday\, October 7. \nWhether you are new to meditation or already have experience\, we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Community Center. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nThis Sound Bath is designed as a continuation of Christiane Wolf’s regular Wellness Wednesday session. We will begin together with a visualization for inner peace\, followed by a guided relaxation of the body to help release tension\, and finish by relaxing together to sound from live instruments tuned specifically to help you find peace. Please wear comfortable clothes. Floor space is limited for those who wish to lie down for the full experience\, but you are welcome to bring a yoga mat\, pillow\, and blankets. \nTeacher Bio: \nKris Matsuoka is a Los Angeles native and a graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He lives and works in Culver City\, California. \nWhile working in the creative industry\, Kris was always asked the same question: “How do you come up with your ideas?” That led to an ongoing exploration of a second question: “Where do ideas even come from?” Looking into the lives of his favorite artists and mentors\, Kris found one common thread. They had all turned to meditation at some point\, and discovered that “not knowing” is a nice place to be. \nThrough the practice of meditation\, Kris has seen how it can sharpen our perception of the world and reconnect us with nature. Sound meditation has become his most recent area of focus. For the past decade\, he has hosted Sound Baths\, workshops\, and classes that use sound to invoke a sense of wonder and help people relax. Kris has found that in a relaxed\, free\, and peaceful state\, your best ideas come most clearly. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Wende Museum Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve. Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, May 29th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: Consider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. Please make sure your storage device is in working condition and has enough space to store your new scans. \nWhen you arrive\, enter through the front of the Wende Museum. From there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Wende Museum Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Wende Museum Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Asked Questions: I have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, you must bring materials you would like to scan and a portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so we recommend you stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.

SUMMARY:MingKwai: The Chinese Typewriter that Globalized the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Wende Museum for the story of the MingKwai Chinese Typewriter\, a machine of near-mythical reputation that debuted in 1947\, disappeared for decades\, and was rediscovered in a basement in New York. \nInvented by Chinese-born author and translator Lin Yutang\, the MingKwai was a revolutionary attempt to rethink the typewriter for the Chinese language. Far more than an unusual writing machine\, its ingenious design anticipated ideas that would later become central to Chinese computing and the global digital age. \nDr. Thomas S. Mullaney\, Guggenheim Fellow and Professor of Chinese History at Stanford University\, brokered the agreement that secured the sole surviving prototype for the public\, arranging for it to be entrusted to the Stanford University Libraries. The rediscovery was featured in a front-page article in The New York Times. \nIn this talk\, Mullaney tells the extraordinary story of the MingKwai: how it worked\, why it mattered\, how it traveled across continents and vanished from view\, and how its rediscovery culminated in an effort to preserve it for the public. Drawing on nearly 20 years of research into Chinese information technology\, he shows how efforts to solve the challenges of Chinese writing shaped technologies that extend far beyond China. \nThe program invites audiences to reconsider a larger question: What does the history of the digital age look like when we tell it from beyond the English-speaking world? \nThe talk is followed by a Q&A and a wine reception in the garden. \nBio \nTom Mullaney is Professor of History at Stanford University and a Guggenheim Fellow. Author of The Chinese Typewriter (John King Fairbank Prize) and How We Disappear\, he built the world’s largest collection on East Asian information technology history and negotiated Stanford’s acquisition of the legendary MingKwai typewriter.
