SUMMARY:Revolution\, Prison\, Exile: Teofilo Ruiz on Leaving Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Historian Teofilo Ruiz joins us to talk about his political engagement in Cuba. As a teenager in San Francisco de Paula\, a town outside Havana\, Ruiz joined the uprising against Fulgencio Batista. He then broke with the Castro government that replaced him\, and in the run-up to the Bay of Pigs he found himself in jail. \nHe left for Miami in 1961 with three changes of clothing\, forty-five dollars\, a box of Cuban cigars to sell\, and a Spanish translation of Jacob Burckhardt’s A History of Greek Civilization\, and went on to become one of the most celebrated historians and teachers in the country. \nRuiz joins us to look back on the risks and disillusionments of his political life\, and on the roots of the continuing tension between the U.S. and Cuba. \nA complimentary reception follows the program. \nAbout Teofilo Ruiz\nTeofilo F. Ruiz is Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus at UCLA\, where he held appointments in both the Department of History and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. A scholar of medieval and early modern Spain\, he has published thirteen books\, among them Crisis and Continuity: Land and Town in Late Medieval Castile and Spanish Society\, 1400–1600. He received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama in 2012 and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also serves on the Wende’s Board of Directors. \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. The garden side gate will open 15 minutes before the start time and is available for ADA access and alternative check-in. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Summer Camp at the Stevie | Seasonal Pickling Workshop with Jess Wang
DESCRIPTION:Reconnect with your creativity through Summer Camp at the Stevie\, a five-part workshop series that invites adults (age 16+) to experience art making through the senses. Set in the Wende Museum’s Stevie Artist Residence garden oasis\, each Sunday workshop explores one of the five senses through a different creative practice\, from watercolor painting and basket weaving to ceramics\, botanical incense making\, and traditional food preservation. \nInspired by the spirit of summer camp\, the series encourages participants to slow down\, notice the world around them\, and engage with natural materials in meaningful ways. Together\, we’ll observe the colors of the landscape\, listen through handmade instruments\, weave with plant fibers\, create fragrances from botanicals\, and preserve seasonal ingredients\, discovering how creativity can deepen our relationship to the environment and one another. \nDesigned for artists and beginners alike\, Summer Camp at the Stevie celebrates making by hand as a pathway to mindfulness\, curiosity\, and community. Whether you attend a single workshop or join us for the full series\, you’ll leave with new skills\, meaningful connections\, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty found in the natural world. \nWhat is the Stevie? \nTucked away on the southwestern side of the Wende Museum’s Community Center\, the Stevie is a “tiny house” turned creative outpost. Surrounded by palms and desert landscaping\, it serves as both an artist residency space and an intimate venue for programs\, gatherings\, and experimental events on its expansive outdoor deck. The Stevie was made possible by a transformative contribution from Steve and Jadwiga Markoff. \nWorkshop Description: TASTE | Seasonal Pickling Workshop with Jess Wang\, Founder\, Gu Grocery \nDiscover the vibrant traditions of Chinese and Taiwanese pickling in this hands-on culinary workshop led by Jess Wang. Participants will learn the fundamentals of fermentation and quick pickling while exploring the cultural histories\, family recipes\, and everyday rituals surrounding preserved foods. Everyone will prepare their own jar of seasonal pickles to take home\, celebrating taste as both nourishment and storytelling. All materials will be provided. \nArtist Bio \nJess Wang is the founder of pickling workshop series Picklé and Gu Grocery\, a project dedicated to celebrating Chinese and Taiwanese food culture through community workshops\, storytelling\, and thoughtfully sourced pantry goods. Her work explores food as a vehicle for cultural memory\, bringing people together through shared meals\, preservation techniques\, and everyday traditions. \nPhoto credit: Scarlett Yaryan

SUMMARY:Tuesday Men's Club
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. No experience with meditation or group work is required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nMore at tuesdaymensclub.com

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Mindfulness Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Wende Museum Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve.
Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

SUMMARY:The Future of History in the Public Sphere
DESCRIPTION:The third installment of The Future of History series\, presented through the Meyer and Renee Luskin Public History Program at the Wende in conjunction with the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy. \nHistory does not only live in books and classrooms. It lives in museums\, libraries\, and archives\, where institutions work to keep the past within reach of everyone. That work now faces real threats: growing indifference and inattention\, misinformation and disinformation\, bold revisionism\, and the rising specter of artificial intelligence as the final arbiter of historical truth. \nThis conversation will feature renowned leaders of local and national institutions committed to imparting historical knowledge to a wide public. What are the challenges of the current political\, cultural\, and technological moment? Can the work of producing reliable and meaningful historical knowledge weather the storm? \nStephen Aron is President and CEO of the Autry Museum of the American West and Professor of History\, Emeritus\, at UCLA. A historian of frontiers\, borderlands\, and the American West\, he has long worked to bridge academic and public history. \nAnthea M. Hartig is the Elizabeth MacMillan Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History\, the first woman to hold the post since the museum opened in 1964. An award-winning public historian\, she previously led the California Historical Society. \nJessie Kornberg is President and CEO of the Skirball Cultural Center\, which she has led since 2020. She came to the role after two decades in civil rights and public-interest law\, including as CEO of the legal aid organization Bet Tzedek. \nDavid N. Myers (moderator) is Distinguished Professor of History at UCLA and served as founding director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy (2017-2026). He convenes The Future of History series. \nTawny Paul (opening remarks) is director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy and a social and economic historian of Britain and the Atlantic World. Her public history work focuses on collaborative history-making and reaching wide audiences. \nAbout the Meyer and Renee Luskin Public History Program at the Wende: This series is made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Meyer and Renee Luskin\, visionary philanthropists whose support has advanced groundbreaking research and community engagement across Los Angeles and beyond. Through their commitment to education\, policy innovation\, and public history\, the Luskins have transformed institutions such as UCLA\, where the Luskin Center for History and Policy is pioneering efforts to apply historical analysis to contemporary challenges. Their dedication to fostering knowledge and civic dialogue ensures that history remains a vital resource in shaping a more just and informed society. \nAs the Wende’s galleries will be open during this program\, you may enter through the front doors of the museum. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

SUMMARY:Digitization Day: Free Archival Digitization
DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, May 29th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: Consider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. Please make sure your storage device is in working condition and has enough space to store your new scans. \nWhen you arrive\, enter through the front of the Wende Museum. From there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Wende Museum Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Wende Museum Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Asked Questions: I have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, you must bring materials you would like to scan and a portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so we recommend you stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.

Her mother\, director of the Bauhaus library in Dessau\, and her grandparents\, prolific children’s book illustrators\, shaped her creative path. Stephanie studied textile design and art history in Germany and Italy\, and built a career that includes award-winning work in silk weaving\, real estate redevelopment\, and children’s literature. She has published three illustrated books and is currently on tour with Holocaust survivor Eva Szepesi\, whose story she adapted for young readers. \nIn 2025\, a firestorm in Pacific Palisades destroyed her family home\, studio\, and much of her art archive\, but key works were saved and will be exhibited. A member of SCBWI and board director at the German Academy for Children’s Literature\, she divides her time between Frankfurt and Los Angeles\, where she runs a real estate company\, supports arts institutions like the Wende Museum\, and continues to explore her family’s history\, including her grandfather’s role in the 1953 uprising on Stalin Allee. \nADA access to the Wende Museum Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot; this gate will be opened approximately 30 minutes before the program.
