SUMMARY:Wende Museum Meditations with Christiane Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for weekly mindfulness meditations. All are welcome\, regardless of experience level.\n\n\nJoin us for our new weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful garden of the Wende Museum. \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal \nand others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd.

SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays and Other Subversions
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on series of textile-based workshops inspired by the Soviet Hippie Collection and other dissident archives at the Wende Museum.\n\n\nRooted in the rebellious spirit of DIY and “making do\,” Samizdat Sundays and Other Subversions invites participants of all ages to gather together to repair\, reclaim\, and create. Inspired by the Soviet Hippie Collection and other dissident archives at the Wende Museum\, this hands-on series of workshops led by artist Kate Ingold offers an opportunity to make a new “imaginary elsewhere” through wearable art and textile materials. \nEach session\, we will explore themes of personal and collective freedom\, expression\, and identity. Workshops include: \nWave your freak flag high: Create flags and banners for imaginary countries \nFrom straight to wide: Convert straight pants into bell bottoms \nPack light: Deconstruct old T-shirts and turn them into shopping bags \nMake it invisible: Sew secret messages into your favorite textiles\, for yourself or others \nPatch it up: Create unique\, hand-sewn patches to use for necessity or identity \nStory of Today: Embroider bandanas or make a fabric journal to tell the story of your experience in our present time \nJoin us for Sundays of stitching and subversion—no experience necessary\, just a willingness to imagine\, mend\, and make with intention. \nAbout the teaching artistKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Exploring Critical Media Literacy and Making Memes

SUMMARY:Wende Museum Meditations with Christiane Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our new weekly mindfulness meditations.

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Surveillance: Francisco Maso in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join conceptual artist Francisco Maso and Cara Megan Lewis\, Deputy Director of the Wende Museum\, for a thought-provoking conversation.\n\n\nJoin conceptual artist Francisco Maso and Cara Megan Lewis\, Deputy Director of the Wende Museum\, for a thought-provoking conversation on Aesthetic Register of Covert Forces\, a powerful series featured in the exhibition Counter/Surveillance: Control\, Privacy\, Agency. Curated by Wende Museum Chief Curator Joes Segal and science historian Marieke Drost\, the exhibition explores how dissidents and artists—particularly during the Cold War—responded creatively to surveillance. From forged passports and disguises to encrypted communication and performative resistance\, artists developed strategies to operate under the radar and\, at times\, to “watch the watchers.” \nIn this conversation\, Maso and Lewis will explore how Aesthetic Register of Covert Forces draws from the artist’s personal archive of surveillance aesthetics—including the undercover uniforms of secret agents—to bear witness to Cuba’s long-standing history of censorship and control. Through this body of work\, Maso reclaims abstract visual language\, transforming it into a form of political resistance and historical testimony. \nAbout the Artist\nFrancisco Maso (Havana\, 1988) is a Cuban-born\, AfroLatinx conceptual artist living and working in Miami. Maso’s work delves into the contemporary understanding of “unconscious behaviors” and challenges what is accepted by society as natural\, necessary\, and normal. As a conceptual artist\, he examines the concept of power and the relationships between blackness\, civil rights\, and the police system through the lens of his personal experiences in Cuba\, Japan\, and the United States. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot. It will open approximately 30 minutes before the program begins. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission to the A-Frame Theater. Doors will open and seating will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of the program. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please note that doors will close promptly at the program’s start time and late entry will not be permitted.

SUMMARY:Memory Artifacts: A Zine-Making Workshop with Alex Belardo Kostiw
DESCRIPTION:What memories live in the things we keep? In this workshop\, participants will make zines about a personal artifact and its meaning to them.\n\n\nWhat memories live in the things we keep? In this workshop\, participants will make zines about a personal artifact and what it means to them. After a look at inspiring examples\, we will collect memories of our artifacts\, and use them to structure and create our own zines. Bring in any heirloom or object with a long history—or several pictures of one. All are welcome\, from beginners to experienced zinesters! \nAbout the instructor: Alex Belardo Kostiw explores unknown parts and possibilities in the everyday\, in personal connection\, and in ourselves. Their work folds poetic elements into visual structures of comics and conceptually driven forms\, creating multimodal reading experiences. Alex has exhibited in zine fests and art book fairs internationally. They are an assistant professor of visual communication design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nExamples of their practice can be found on their website: tenderly-honestly.com\n \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. \n  \n

\nAbout the teaching artist\nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out.

SUMMARY:FRAMEWORKS | Ivana Dama: The Air Belongs to the Children
DESCRIPTION:FRAMEWORKS is a new interdisciplinary music series for 2025 designed to take audiences on an adventurous cultural and artistic journey in the state-of-the-art A-Frame Theater of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, on the campus of the Wende Museum. The series merges creative disciplines\, from film and dance to poetry and music\, and takes inspiration from the collection and exhibitions of the Wende. \nSound artist and researcher Ivana Dama will use analog synthesizers to create an atmospheric and ambient soundscape\, incorporating custom-made capacitive sensors developed in collaboration with the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms\, together with Neil Gershenfeld and Quentin Bolsee. She will appear to touch mere air to activate sound. Visuals created live from her instruments will enhance this experiential\, immersive performance. \nIvana Dama was born and raised in Belgrade shortly after the end of the civil war and during the time of NATO bombing. The tension between the former Yugoslavian countries was still undoubtedly present. Even though she was only a young child when the bombing began\, images and sounds of the destruction still clearly permeate her mind. The memories of living in a small shelter with the sounds and vibrations of the air raid sirens have contributed to her interest in using air and sound as a primary medium. Her work\, which includes audio-video installations\, robotics\, web projects\, and music performances\, explores the deep connections between sound\, memory\, and human experience. Ivana holds an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University and a prior degree from UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture. \nProgram Schedule \nGarden Reception 1 p.m.—3 p.m. \nGarden DJ Set by Ariana Mamnoon 1 p.m.—2 p.m. \nA-Frame Theater Concert by Ivana Dama 2 p.m.—3 p.m. \nPlease note that the A-Frame Theater doors will close promptly at the start of the performance at 2 p.m. Late entry will not be permitted\, though guests are welcome to enjoy the performance from the garden. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission to the A-Frame Theater. Limited seating will be available on a first come\, first served basis. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot\, it will open at 12:30 p.m. \nThis event is presented with support from dublab.

SUMMARY:Blooming Threads: Soviet Flower Symbolism In Cross Stitch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a vibrant workshop with Folk Lounge\, to explore the rich tradition of floral cross stitch in Soviet and Russian culture\, focusing particularly on roses and flowers as symbols of transformation and potential. \nDrawing inspiration from beloved Soviet animations like “Alenkiy Tsvetochek” (The Scarlet Flower\, the Russian Beauty and the Beast) and “Tsvetik-Semitsvetik” (The Flower with Seven Petals)\, we’ll explore how flowers symbolized human potential and the fulfillment of deepest wishes. \nThrough hands-on cross stitch techniques\, participants will create their own floral embroidery pieces while discussing how these natural symbols transcend cultural boundaries yet carry specific cultural meanings about transformation and becoming. \nThe workshop connects these traditional patterns to contemporary life\, demonstrating how the simple act of stitching can become a meditative practice for nurturing our own growth and honoring our wishes for beauty in the world. \nTeacher Bio: \nBorn in Vladivostok\, Russia\, Shagoh is of Armenian and Russian heritage and has traveled the West Coast from Seattle to Los Angeles. \nWith a background in luxury fashion\, wearables\, and human-computer interaction\, she is a seasoned multidisciplinary design leader\, blending creativity and innovation with global teams. \nHer artistry spans textile arts\, leatherwork\, painting\, and illustration\, grounded in her MFA in Human-Computer Interaction (California College of the Arts) and a Fashion Design degree (Oregon State University). \nA trained facilitator\, she is passionate about fostering community\, collaboration\, healing\, and shared learning. As the founder of Folk Lounge\, Shagoh is dedicated to uniting people through the exploration of ornamentation and sacred symbolism across cultures. \nEnter the garden gate off of the parking lot adjacent to the Wende museum on Culver Blvd.

SUMMARY:Wende Museum Meditations with Christiane Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for weekly mindfulness meditations. All are welcome\, regardless of experience level.\n\n\nNote: Our weekly mindfulness sessions will be taking a break for the summer\, the final program will be on July 2. It will resume in September. \nJoin us for our weekly mindfulness meditations.
