SUMMARY:Queering the Archive: Cut Copy Queer Paste
DESCRIPTION:What makes collage a queer medium? Throughout this hands-on session\, we’ll cut\, layer\, juxtapose\, and reinterpret pre-existing narratives. Using the Wende Museum’s collection as inspiration\, we’ll construct collages and experiment with conversations and frictions between words and images. \nCut Copy Queer Paste is one part of a three-part workshop series\, Queering the Archive\, that invites participants to explore the queer past through hands-on creative practices of mapping\, poetry\, and collage. Each two-hour session begins with a brief introduction to the day’s method\, followed by time to experiment with materials and ideas. We’ll conclude each workshop with an opportunity to share reflections and discuss our work together. \nPlease note that attendance at every workshop is not required. Each session is designed to stand on its own\, and participants are welcome to attend any or all of the workshops.

SUMMARY:The Battle of Algiers | Cinema Under Pressure
DESCRIPTION:Across continents and decades\, filmmakers have faced censorship\, intimidation\, and exile for telling uncomfortable truths. Some films were banned outright. Others were attacked\, suppressed\, or quietly buried. The Battle of Algiers is a perfect example of the tension between creative expression and state control. \nSet during the Algerian War of Independence\, the film reconstructs the urban guerrilla campaign waged against French colonial forces in the Casbah of Algiers. What unfolds is an unflinching portrait of resistance\, repression\, and the cycles of violence that define both. Neither side is spared. \nBanned in France for five years after its release and screened by revolutionary movements and military strategists alike\, the film occupies a rare position in cinema history: it has been claimed\, condemned\, and studied by nearly every side of the debates it depicts. Those debates have not ended. Questions about terrorism and counterterrorism\, occupation and resistance\, collective punishment and state violence remain as contested today as they were in 1966. \nCinema Under Pressure presents landmark works that challenged power\, questioned authority\, and faced the consequences. This screening and conversation series examines films that confronted political systems and provoked censorship\, suppression\, or backlash in response. Each program pairs a major film with a discussion featuring invited guest experts in film\, history\, and related fields. \nOur guest speaker for this program will be Sohail Daulatzai\, a UC Irvine professor. Daulatzai explores the afterlives of empire\, Black Radicalism and decolonization across scholarship\, film/video\, text and the archive. He’s the author and co/editor of several books including Fifty Years of the Battle of Algiers: Past as Prologue. He’s directed short film/video with Yasiin Bey\, the critically acclaimed band Algiers\, and Zack de la Rocha and he’s collaborated with artists such as Rage Against the Machine\, Bouchra Khalili\, Jamel Shabazz\, Immortal Technique\, Riz Ahmed\, Suheir Hammad\, Brother Ali\, A.G. Rojas\, Chuck D\, and others. \nThe program will be preceded by a complimentary reception starting at 6 p.m.\, with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission to the A-Frame Theater. Limited seating will be available on a first come\, first served basis.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:In June\, our regular Mindfulness session with Christiane Wolf will be replaced by a Sound Bath led by Kris Matsuoka. Christiane returns on Wednesday\, July 1. \nWhether you are new to meditation or already have experience\, we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nThis Sound Bath is designed as a continuation of Christiane Wolf’s regular Wellness Wednesday session. We will begin together with a visualization for inner peace\, followed by a guided relaxation of the body to help release tension\, and finish by relaxing together to sound from live instruments tuned specifically to help you find peace. Please wear comfortable clothes. Floor space is limited for those who wish to lie down for the full experience\, but you are welcome to bring a yoga mat\, pillow\, and blankets. \nTeacher Bio: \nKris Matsuoka is a Los Angeles native and a graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He lives and works in Culver City\, California. \nWhile working in the creative industry\, Kris was always asked the same question: “How do you come up with your ideas?” That led to an ongoing exploration of a second question: “Where do ideas even come from?” Looking into the lives of his favorite artists and mentors\, Kris found one common thread. They had all turned to meditation at some point\, and discovered that “not knowing” is a nice place to be. \nThrough the practice of meditation\, Kris has seen how it can sharpen our perception of the world and reconnect us with nature. Sound meditation has become his most recent area of focus. For the past decade\, he has hosted Sound Baths\, workshops\, and classes that use sound to invoke a sense of wonder and help people relax. Kris has found that in a relaxed\, free\, and peaceful state\, your best ideas come most clearly. \nPlease enter through the garden gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first served. Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nWe encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt\, a pair of jeans\, or any textile you’re ready to transform\, repair\, or experiment with. \nEach session is free\, open to all skill levels\, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch\, alter\, repair\, and imagine new forms of expression. \nJoin us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nHOW TO WRITE A DADAIST POEM \nJune 7\, 2026 \nTo end our month of Dada fun\, we will follow Tristan Tzara’s instructions to construct a Dadaist cut-up poem using vintage and new materials. This poem may be made of words\, colors\, textures\, objects\, or ideas. The poem may be the impetus for a collage made of vintage magazines or discarded textiles\, or perhaps will be embroidered on a shirt or sealed up in an envelope. In true Dada fashion\, the options are endless. Join us! \nNECKLACE A LA AZAZELLO \nJune 14\, 2026 \nIn honor of the Soviet Hippie and nonconformist Azazello (Anatoly Kalabin)\, whose extensive archive is in the Wende Museum’s collection\, we will make a necklace made of discarded materials. We will begin the workshop with a slideshow of the archive to get a sense of the artistic vision of Azazello. His journals are full of drawings\, doodles\, and poetry. Perhaps your necklace will feature an Azazello-style image or poem\, or perhaps yours will appear blank and without decoration\, but will hold a secret decoration away from public view. \nSECRET MESSAGE BRACELET \nJune 21\, 2026 \nToday we will make a bracelet that contains a secret message. Perhaps this message is made of symbols or objects\, a cryptic message that only you understand; or perhaps it is made of embroidered or written words that are understandable\, but are on a part of the bracelet that isn’t immediately visible. The bracelet may be designed to be noticed or designed to be worn in secret. \nTURN AN OLD TEE INTO A SHOPPING BAG \nJune 28\, 2026 \nIn this workshop\, we will turn an old tee into a shopping bag\, modeled after the plastic bags that are ubiquitous in our Age of Plastic. This bag can be gusseted or have a simple hem or even be hem-less\, tied together in a fringe-like manner. Perhaps your bag will rock whatever message was on the tee originally\, or perhaps you’ll embellish the bag with patches and embroidery. The choice is yours! \nAbout the teaching artist \nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Tea Dances: Groove and Step with Ronnie Martin
DESCRIPTION:The Wende Museum’s Tea Dance series invites you to move\, mingle\, and unwind through the joyful rhythm of social dance. Hosted in the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, each session features different dance traditions\, ranging from Argentine tango to vintage swing\, led by local artists and dance instructors. No experience or partner required. \nTea dances originated in early 20th-century Britain and America as daytime socials\, often held in hotels and ballrooms\, offering live music\, light refreshments\, and a welcoming space for community connection. Revived in the queer communities of mid-century America\, the tradition evolved into a vibrant celebration of expression and belonging. \nIn that spirit\, our Sunday Tea Dances offer a space to unplug\, connect\, and move together. These afternoons are for everyone: curious beginners\, practiced dancers\, and people just looking to enjoy good music and warm company. \nCome for the class\, stay for the social\, and rediscover the art of togetherness. \nFree and open to all. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. \nAbout the June 21 Session \nThis is an all levels dance class that captures certain elements of traditional southern line dance and hip hop choreography simultaneously! The class will involve choreography however\, there is still space for individual creativity and unique dance expression. Groove and Step cultivates energy\, connection\, and JOY! \nAbout the instructor: \nRonnie Martin is a professional dancer/choreographer from New Orleans\, Louisiana. He has been a part of two major dance companies\, So Real Dance Co. and Texas Southern Dance Co. and has been teaching all levels of hip hop choreography for the past 10 years. Once he relocated to LA he developed a love and passion for fitness which encouraged him to create his own fun and effective way to have the best of both worlds (Dance and Fitness). He has been teaching hip hop cardio classes for 7 years now and line dance classes for 5 years ! He believes that Dance fitness is great way to get active as well decompress. His goal is to constantly create spaces for the advancement of physical and mental health in a creative way! \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. The garden side gate will open 15 minutes before the start time and is available for ADA access and check-in. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time.

SUMMARY:Ivana Dama: A Performance and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live performance by artist Ivana Dama\, presented alongside her installation Breathing Alarms\, now on view in the East German guardhouse in the Wende Museum garden. \nAt the center of Breathing Alarms is a custom air-raid siren powered not by machinery but by human breath. Visitors’ inhalations and exhalations generate the siren’s sound and set in motion an animation of birds inside an aluminum zoetrope. The work transforms a device built for monitoring and protection into a responsive instrument\, one that only sounds through shared physical presence. \nFor this program\, Dama presents a live performance drawn from her ongoing research into air-raid sirens. The performance is followed by a conversation between the artist and Chief Curator Joes Segal. \nBorn and raised in Belgrade\, former Yugoslavia\, and now based in New York\, Dama investigates alarm signals across social and natural systems\, from the absence of birdsong as a warning sign to the role of sirens in marking ecological\, political\, and social concerns. \nBreathing Alarms is on view through October 11\, 2026. The installation is made possible by the generous support of the David Bermant Foundation\, and developed in collaboration with the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Mindfulness Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve.
