Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nWe encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt\, a pair of jeans\, or any textile you’re ready to transform\, repair\, or experiment with. \nAugust 3: Secret Messages on Any Textile – learn techniques to hide words and symbols in fabric. \nAugust 10: Tee Bag – transform and repurpose a T‑shirt into a bag. \nAugust 17: Visible Repair / Bellbottoms for the Adventurous – celebrate mending as art\, or reimagine old jeans with bold new flares. \nAugust 24: Secret Messages\, Part 2 – return to textile secrecy with new methods and layers. \nAugust 31: Communal Project: A Textile Exquisite Corpse – contribute to a collective\, evolving piece stitched together from everyone’s hands and ideas. \nEach session is free\, open to all skill levels\, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch\, alter\, repair\, and imagine new forms of expression. \nAbout the teaching artist\nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Hosted in the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, each session features different dance traditions\, ranging from Argentine tango to vintage swing\, led by local artists and dance instructors. No experience or partner required. \nTea dances originated in early 20th-century Britain and America as daytime socials\, often held in hotels and ballrooms\, offering live music\, light refreshments\, and a welcoming space for community connection. Revived in the queer communities of mid-century America\, the tradition evolved into a vibrant celebration of expression and belonging. \nIn that spirit\, our Sunday Tea Dances offer a space to unplug\, connect\, and move together. These afternoons are for everyone: curious beginners\, practiced dancers\, and people just looking to enjoy good music and warm company. \nCome for the class\, stay for the social\, and rediscover the art of togetherness. \nFree and open to all. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. \nSchedule: \nSunday\, August 3\, 3-6 pm\, LA Swing Dance Posse with Beach Cities Swing Band \nLA Swing Dance Posse with Beach Cities Swing Band (LASDP) is a non profit organization formed to honor contributions African Americans have made to vernacular jazz dance through performance and education. They teach the history of those styles\, ranging from the 1800’s to the present. This gives them the opportunity to fill in knowledge gaps of Swing dance history\, a history that has deep roots in Black culture. Their mission is to educate\, preserve\, promote\, teach and perform the vernacular jazz dances such as Savoy Swing\, Charleston\, and Lindy Hop dance. \nThe Beach Cities Swing Band (BCSB)\, founded in 2000 by members of the El Segundo Concert Band\, is a 17-piece big band with featured vocalists\, performing classics made famous by Count Basie\, Glenn Miller\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Goodman\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and Artie Shaw\, as well as modern swing arrangements and fresh takes on beloved tunes. Now operating under the South Bay Music Association\, the BCSB is dedicated to keeping the big band tradition alive and thriving. True to its name\, the band has performed throughout the South Bay’s beach cities—including Manhattan Beach\, Hermosa Beach\, Redondo Beach\, Torrance\, Palos Verdes Estates\, Long Beach\, Marina Del Rey\, Los Angeles\, and its home base of El Segundo. \nSunday\, August 17\, 3-6 pm\, Oxygen Tango \nDiscover the global language of tango in this one-hour beginner class led by Oxygen Tango\, a beloved LA-based school known for its welcoming\, connection-driven approach. SUMMARY:Sound Baths with Shea Cunningham
DESCRIPTION:Take a pause and reconnect with your body\, breath\, and mind through a restorative sound bath led by Shea Cunningham\, a longtime yoga instructor\, sound healer\, and local sustainability leader. \nEach session begins with 15 to 20 minutes of gentle breathwork and grounding movement to help prepare the body to fully absorb the resonant tones of crystal bowls and other therapeutic instruments. The sound bath that follows supports the nervous system\, reduces anxiety\, and restores a sense of calm and balance. \nPlease bring a yoga mat and pillow if you plan to lie down. A limited number of meditation cushions will be available. The stage will be reserved for those who wish to recline\, first come first serve. Chairs are also available for those who prefer or require a seated option. \nCheck-in will be through the garden gate from the parking lot\, not the front of the museum. \nAbout the Facilitator \nShea Cunningham has taught yoga since 2004 and has been offering sound baths to the community for the past year. She is also a climate resilience expert and the founder of Balanced Approach\, where she leads the Culver City Sustainable Business Certification Program. DESCRIPTION:Join the Wende for Summer Camp at the Stevie\, a hands-on art making series situated in a lush oasis in the middle of Culver City. \nWhat is the Stevie? \nTucked away on the southwestern side of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, the Stevie is a “tiny house” turned creative outpost. Surrounded by palms and desert landscaping\, it serves as both an artist residency space and an intimate venue for programs\, gatherings\, and experimental events on its expansive outdoor deck. The Stevie was made possible by a transformative contribution from Steve and Jadwiga Markoff. \nTwo Day Incense Immersion with Persephenie \nAugust 23 & 24\, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. \nThe Two Day Incense Immersion is an in-depth study of the art\, history\, and materials used in incense. \nThis is a hands-on course where you’ll learn the craft of artisanal incense. \nDAY ONE: Raw Materials\, Slide Show\, & Combustible Incense \nDay one we’ll start by meeting herbs\, learning about their context in the history and making of incense\, while enjoying a rich visual slideshow. The latter part of the day focus’s on crafting botanical combustible incense\, incorporating the variety of herbs you learned about in the morning. We’ll burn an assortment of materials\, learn to mix and make an aromatic incense dough\, and shape incense into cones and sticks. You’ll learn how incense is made\, ratios\, and about materials. \nDAY TWO: Warming Incense\, Incense as a Ritual\, and Making Incense Pastilles \nThere are two types of incense\, incense you warm\, and incense you burn. Day Two focus’s on non-combustible incense that’s meant to be warmed\, not burned. On the second day\, in conjunction with another colorful slideshow\, you’ll learn how to warm incense as a ritual\, about ancient incense tools and accruements\, and then at the latter part of the day\, you’ll create non-combustible incense pastilles. \nINCLUDED: \nMeet a variety of raw herbs and materials used for incense making. \nA rich visual slide show highlighting herbs\, incense accruements\, and incense history\, \nLearn about where the materials came from and their importance in myth\, commerce\, and culture. \nLearn about incense history as medicine\, in sacred offerings\, religion\, and aesthetics. \nLearn how to process herbs and resins\, create incense recipes\, and the importance of order when making your own recipes. \nLearn about different types of incense\, including incense that’s heated\, not burned. \nCraft your own botanical incense using herbs\, woods\, resins and spices from around the world. \nAll Materials and Tools included. \nMATERIALS COST: $45 \nDue to generous funding\, the Wende Museum and Persephenie are able to offer the two day incense course with only a materials fee. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot. SUMMARY:Sound Baths with Shea Cunningham
DESCRIPTION:Take a pause and reconnect with your body\, breath\, and mind through a restorative sound bath led by Shea Cunningham\, a longtime yoga instructor\, sound healer\, and local sustainability leader. \nEach session begins with 15 to 20 minutes of gentle breathwork and grounding movement to help prepare the body to fully absorb the resonant tones of crystal bowls and other therapeutic instruments. The sound bath that follows supports the nervous system\, reduces anxiety\, and restores a sense of calm and balance. \nPlease bring a yoga mat and pillow if you plan to lie down. A limited number of meditation cushions will be available. The stage will be reserved for those who wish to recline\, first come first serve. Chairs are also available for those who prefer or require a seated option. \nCheck-in will be through the garden gate from the parking lot\, not the front of the museum. \nAbout the Facilitator \nShea Cunningham has taught yoga since 2004 and has been offering sound baths to the community for the past year. She is also a climate resilience expert and the founder of Balanced Approach\, where she leads the Culver City Sustainable Business Certification Program. Her work reflects a deep commitment to both personal well-being and community sustainability.

She was the former Artistic Director of the Indie Memphis Film Festival in Tennessee and the Founding Director of the La Di Da Film Festival in New York. She has written about film for publications including The New York Times\, Sight and Sound\, Film Comment\, and W Magazine. \nDwayne LeBlanc is a Los Angeles–based\, first-generation Caribbean American self-taught filmmaker whose work explores themes of migration\, visibility\, and dual identities. \nHis debut narrative short film\, Civic\, was named one of The Best Movies of 2023 by The New Yorker. His sophomore film\, Now\, Hear Me Good\, premiered in the Tiger Shorts Competition at IFFR and continues to screen at major international festivals and leading art institutions. He is set to complete his trilogy with the upcoming short\, You Do Not Exist. \nCollectively\, his work has been presented at venues including The Met\, MoMA\, Harvard\, Stanford\, UC Berkeley\, NYU\, and CalArts. Hosted in the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, each session features different dance traditions\, ranging from Argentine tango to vintage swing\, led by local artists and dance instructors. No experience or partner required. \nTea dances originated in early 20th-century Britain and America as daytime socials\, often held in hotels and ballrooms\, offering live music\, light refreshments\, and a welcoming space for community connection. Revived in the queer communities of mid-century America\, the tradition evolved into a vibrant celebration of expression and belonging. \nIn that spirit\, our Sunday Tea Dances offer a space to unplug\, connect\, and move together. These afternoons are for everyone: curious beginners\, practiced dancers\, and people just looking to enjoy good music and warm company. \nCome for the class\, stay for the social\, and rediscover the art of togetherness. \nFree and open to all. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. \nSchedule: \nSunday\, August 3\, 3-6 pm\, LA Swing Dance Posse with Beach Cities Swing Band \nLA Swing Dance Posse with Beach Cities Swing Band (LASDP) is a non profit organization formed to honor contributions African Americans have made to vernacular jazz dance through performance and education. They teach the history of those styles\, ranging from the 1800’s to the present. This gives them the opportunity to fill in knowledge gaps of Swing dance history\, a history that has deep roots in Black culture. Their mission is to educate\, preserve\, promote\, teach and perform the vernacular jazz dances such as Savoy Swing\, Charleston\, and Lindy Hop dance. \nThe Beach Cities Swing Band (BCSB)\, founded in 2000 by members of the El Segundo Concert Band\, is a 17-piece big band with featured vocalists\, performing classics made famous by Count Basie\, Glenn Miller\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Goodman\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and Artie Shaw\, as well as modern swing arrangements and fresh takes on beloved tunes. Now operating under the South Bay Music Association\, the BCSB is dedicated to keeping the big band tradition alive and thriving. True to its name\, the band has performed throughout the South Bay’s beach cities—including Manhattan Beach\, Hermosa Beach\, Redondo Beach\, Torrance\, Palos Verdes Estates\, Long Beach\, Marina Del Rey\, Los Angeles\, and its home base of El Segundo. \nSunday\, August 17\, 3-6 pm\, Oxygen Tango \nDiscover the global language of tango in this one-hour beginner class led by Oxygen Tango\, a beloved LA-based school known for its welcoming\, connection-driven approach. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful garden of the Wende Museum. \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal \nand others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd.

Come as you are. Move how you feel. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot. It will open approximately 30 minutes before the program begins. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission to the A-Frame Theater. Doors will open and seating will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of the program. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis.
