SUMMARY:Geopolitics and International Modernism in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Modernism in architecture has long been associated with human progress and universalism. It has also\, at times\, been criticized as contributing to a loss of identity and genius loci\, and even blamed for the alienation and social failures of anonymous suburban landscapes. \nThis panel considers the relevance of these opposing verdicts and examines the geopolitical incentives behind the spread of modernist architecture across borders in the East\, the West\, and the Global South from the Cold War period to the present. Topics include utopian and dystopian visions of global modern architecture; architecture as a form of soft diplomacy; tensions between political motivations and architectural practice; the role of architectural tourism; and the status of international modernism today. It will be moderated by Joes Segal\, the Wende’s Chief Curator and Director of Programming. \nSusan Horowitz is an artist/curator based in NY and LA whose case study/documentary projects explore modernist architecture\, urbanization\, architectural tourism and preservation. These interests reflect study of the UNESCO World Heritage program\, Getty Keeping It Modern Initiatives\, arts restitution\, museum exhibitions on modern architecture and involvement with advocacy/preservation programs of the World Monument Fund and Docomomo. The focus of this art practice\, which began with projects about early modern LA architecture\, led to a parallel project as director of preservation projects for hamptons20centurymodern.org\, presenting the under-the-radar\, threatened modernist heritage in the Hamptons. Currently a monograph and exhibition based on a notable Hamptons architect team focused on their archive and the current house owners as preservationists is underway. \nDavid Ruy’s work develops out of a single observation: what we take to be reality is largely built out of representations—buildings\, images\, interfaces\, stories. This insight has driven thirty years of design practice and theoretical writing\, work sustained by an ongoing engagement with emerging creative technologies. He has founded graduate programs and lectured throughout Asia\, Europe\, and the Americas. His work has been collected by prominent institutions and is frequently cited in studies of contemporary design culture. Presently\, he writes and lectures on the ramifications of artificial intelligence for cultural production while advising institutions and companies worldwide on design innovation and cultural strategy. He is on the faculty at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles\, having previously held appointments at Columbia University\, Princeton University\, University of Pennsylvania\, and Pratt Institute. \nŁukasz Stanek is Professor at A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He also holds a dry appointment at the Department of History\, University of Michigan. Stanek is the author of Henry Lefebvre on Space: Architecture\, Urban Research\, and the Production of Theory (University of Minnesota Press\, 2011) and Architecture in Global Socialism: Eastern Europe\, West Africa\, and the Middle East in the Cold War (Princeton University Press\, 2020). He curated several exhibitions\, including The Gift: Stories of Generosity and Violence in Architecture (Architekturmuseum der TUM\, Munich\, 2024). Stanek is co-curator of the Wende’s current exhibition Intersections: The Architecture of Victor Adegbite and Charles Polónyi in Ghana. \nJoe Day is an architect and theorist in Los Angeles\, where he leads Deegan-Day Design LLC and serves on the design and history/theory faculty at SCI-Arc. In both his design and writing\, Day examines the intersections of contemporary art\, urbanism and architecture as visual disciplines. He contributed an additional foreword to the 2009 edition of Reyner Banham’s seminal study\, Los Angeles: Architecture of the Four Ecologies (University of California Press\, 2009)\, and in the spring of 2012 taught at Yale School of Architecture as the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Chair. Day’s recent Corrections & Collections: Architectures for Art and Crime (Routledge\, 2013) explores new polarities in contemporary architecture and urbanism. He serves on the Board of Trustees at SCI-Arc\, and as a Director at the W.M. The program begins with solo piano selections by Shchedrin and Beethoven\, followed by solo violin improvisation and Brahms’s lyrical Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano\, dialoguing with poetry throughout. \nInna Faliks is Head of Piano and Professor of Piano at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and author of the memoir Weight in the Fingertips: A Musical Odyssey from Soviet Ukraine to the World Stage (Bloomsbury/Backbeat). \nGilles Apap is an internationally renowned violinist known for his virtuosity\, stylistic range\, and improvisational approach. \nDaniel Tiffany is a poet and scholar whose work explores the intersections of language\, sound\, and literary form. \nOriginally founded by Faliks in New York\, Music/Words has become a platform for artists working at the intersection of music and text. This Los Angeles residency at the Wende builds each program around close listening\, live exchange\, and the shifting balance between composition and language. \nThis event’s piano maintenance support is provided by UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music\, Friends of Piano Fund. \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, February 25\, for an evening of reading and conversation with author and illustrator Stephanie Lunkewitz and Holocaust survivor Mary Bauer\, presented in partnership with the Goethe International Charter School. \nStephanie Lunkewitz will speak about the life of Eva Szepesi\, whose Holocaust testimony she illustrated and narrated in her book Ich war Eva Diamant. She will reflect on how Eva Szepesi’s story has become intertwined with her own life\, and on the responsibility of carrying survivor voices forward through art and storytelling. \nMary Bauer will share reflections on her own experiences as a survivor\, offering a firsthand account of the long aftermath of the Shoah. \nTogether\, the conversation will explore how three very different lives\, Eva’s\, Mary’s\, and Stephanie’s\, intersect\, and what these interwoven stories reveal about remembrance\, responsibility\, and the urgency behind the phrase “Never Again Means Now.” \nThe discussion will be moderated by Anne-Christine Witzgall\, author and co-founder of the Goethe International Charter School. \nPrior the program\, guests are invited to a complimentary garden reception beginning at 6pm. The program will begin in the A-Frame Theater at 7pm. \nBios \nStephanie Lunkewitz is a German-American illustrator and author who grew up in East Germany and came to the West after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her work spans textile design\, illustration\, and children’s literature. Lunkewitz divides her time between Frankfurt and Los Angeles. \nMary Bauer was born in Budapest in 1927 and survived Auschwitz-Birkenau\, multiple camps\, and a death march before being liberated in 1945. She immigrated to the United States in 1951 and has since dedicated herself to Holocaust education through schools\, colleges\, and the Holocaust Museum Los Angeles. \nAnne-Christine Witzgall was born in West Berlin and is an author and co-founder of the Goethe International Charter School\, where she works at the intersection of education\, literature\, and cultural exchange. She holds a Masters in Journalism and is a tour guide at the Museum of Tolerance.

DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, February 27th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: \nConsider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable USB-A-compatible storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. \nThe Wende offers free parking in the lot adjacent to the building. You will enter the front entrance of the Wende Museum and from there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Glorya Kaufman Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Ask Questions: \nI have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, participants must bring materials they would like to scan and a portable USB-A-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so it is wise to stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.

DESCRIPTION:WIP 021 features works in progress by Adam Kerbel & Santiago Villarreal followed by a post-show talk back moderated by WIP alum Daria Kaufman. \nWhat is WIP? \nWIP is an artist-led\, work-in-progress performance platform co-founded by dance artists Kate Wallich\, Stephanie Zaletel\, and Belize Wilheim. Launched in 2023\, WIP was created to give choreographers and performance makers a “low-tech\, high-visibility” space to share evolving works with audiences\, fostering curiosity\, dialogue\, and critical exchange at every stage of development. \nThe format is simple: each WIP features two artists sharing up to 25 minutes of work-in-progress\, followed by a moderated post-show conversation. \nWIP’s mission is to provide a supportive and sustainable environment for artists to test new ideas\, receive meaningful feedback\, and catalyze experimentation within the Los Angeles dance and performance community. SUMMARY:Defiant Laughter: An Evening of Soviet Jewish Purim Spiels
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a staged reading of archival Purim spiel scripts shared within Soviet Jewish communities\, performed in newly translated English. These witty\, subversive works were originally passed hand-to-hand and performed in private apartments\, where Jewish life continued behind closed doors. \nPurim is a holiday celebrating survival and the triumph over oppression\, traditionally marked by humor\, costumes\, and spirited storytelling. In the USSR\, that spirit took on deeper meaning\, as communities preserved tradition through intimate\, often improvised performances in living rooms. \nThese spiels reflect that world—blending satire\, history\, and quiet resistance. Open to all audiences\, this event offers a unique chance to experience both the joy of Purim and the resilience of cultural life under constraint. \nAs the museum will be closed during this program\, please enter through the garden side gate\, which will open 30 minutes before the start time. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Mindfulness Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve. SUMMARY:Bauhaus | Beyond the Surface: Dimensional Thinking on Paper
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop introduces key ideas from the Bauhaus by exploring how dimension emerges from simple materials. Participants begin with the 1D line\, move to the 2D plane through drawing and cutting\, and transform flat surfaces into 3D structures using folding techniques inspired by foundational Bauhaus exercises. Paper is treated not just as a surface for drawing but as a structural material whose strength\, flexibility\, and resistance could be revealed through various techniques – adhering to the Bauhaus idea that materiality meant understanding and honoring the inherent qualities of materials. Through strategic cuts\, bends\, and structural manipulation\, paper becomes volume\, tension\, and space. Finally\, participants activate their forms through movement or light (a mobile phone light will do)  introducing time as a fourth dimension and expanding static geometry into a spatial experience. \nThis program is part of the Wende Bauhaus series\, in which local artists lead hands-on classes inspired by the Bauhaus school’s learning-by-doing philosophy and its spirit of experimentation\, play\, and discovery. \nAbout the teaching artist: Minna Philips is a contemporary artist from India\, living in Los Angeles. Her architectural drawings explore spaces as it relates to our bodies and perception. Minna’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are in private and public collections\, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. One of her works\, as part of the Moon Gallery project based in the Netherlands\, will eventually find a permanent place on the Moon in 2026. \nAs the museum will be closed during this program\, please enter through the garden side gate\, which will open 30 minutes before the start time.
