SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nWe encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt\, a pair of jeans\, or any textile you’re ready to transform\, repair\, or experiment with. \nEach session is free\, open to all skill levels\, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch\, alter\, repair\, and imagine new forms of expression. \nSCHEDULE \n“HAND” BOOK MADE OF CLOTH \nMarch 8\, 2026 \nInspired by the beautiful “handbook” by artist Ruth Katzenstein Souza currently on view at Art Division in MacArthur Park\, we will make a cloth “book” that is illustrated with embroidery\, drawing\, embellishments\, collage\, etc. Perhaps your “book” is a handkerchief that reveals its story when it is unfolded; or perhaps yours will be more of a scroll than a book\, one that unfurls\, or perhaps yours will unravel as it is read. Join us! \nSee images of Katzenstein Souza’s book on her website: \nhttps://www.ruthkatzensteinsouza.com/handbook \nACCORDION BOOK \nMarch 15\, 2026 \nModeled after the pilgrimage temple and shrine stamp books of Japan (called goshuin)\, we will make simple accordion books that can be embellished on the outside and the inside with collage\, writing\, cloth\, etc. Working with our abundant stash of discarded materials\, we will make accordion books of various sizes and for various purposes. Will your accordion book be for recording a spiritual pilgrimage? Or perhaps to hold your favorite recipes\, or your favorite poems? Perhaps your accordion book will be an unfolding love letter\, to another person or the squirrel who lives in your favorite tree. \nPATCHES! \nMarch 22\, 2026 \nWe will begin our workshop with a visit to the Wende Museum archives to see the beautiful handmade patches in the Soviet Hippie collection. Using felt as our substrate\, we will embroider\, collage\, embellish\, and appliqué designs to make a patch to use to cover up a rip or tear\, or perhaps to communicate an idea or concept. \nFor an extra special weekend\, come to the museum on Saturday\, March 21 as well to enjoy the Soviet Hippie Archives Open House. You’ll come away inspired\, I’m certain of it! \nFINISH IT! CLINIC \nMarch 29\, 2026 \nToday we will finish up projects we’re working on\, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays\, or other projects that have been lingering in your studio or drawer waiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you\, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials\, if your project requires them. If this is your first time coming to the workshop\, you are welcome to work on a past Samizdat Sunday project. Perhaps you’ll make a series of mail art collage postcards\, or perhaps you’ll sew a secret pocket or message into your favorite shirt. Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende. \nAbout the teaching artist \nKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot.

SUMMARY:S.U.T@LA – Vipassana Meditation Practice Group
DESCRIPTION:Practice Isn’t Just on the Cushion — It’s Wherever Life Takes Us \nOur practice is inspired by the teachings of Sayadaw U Tejaniya (S.U.T)\, which invite us to bring wise awareness into every part of life. Mindfulness isn’t just for the cushion — it’s for the small\, ordinary moments that make up our days. \nSome weeks\, we’ll sit together in silence at the Wende Museum. Other times\, practice might take us outdoors for a gentle hike\, to a public event\, on a mindful shopping trip\, or even online via Zoom. Wherever we are\, the essence of practice remains the same: staying present\, open\, and kind. \nThis new L.A.-based sangha is rooted in curiosity\, ease\, and Dharma friendship. Together\, we’ll explore how to live with awareness and discover what unfolds when we meet life just as it is. We warmly invite you to join us — to sit\, to walk\, to laugh\, and to grow together on this path of practice. \nPlease note we are holding Q&A session from 5PM. Q&A sessions are for continuing students only. Please contact me if you are interested in joining.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Men's Club
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. No experience with meditation or group work is required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nMore at tuesdaymensclub.com.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Mindfulness Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve. Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

SUMMARY:Bauhaus | RAW! CLAY! : Exploring Unfired Clay as a Sculptural Medium
DESCRIPTION:Clay is beloved for its messy\, joyous immediacy\, and\, of course\, for the reward of watching an item transform through firing from clay to ceramic. But many artists work with unfired clay as a way to embrace the material’s fragility and to explore its symbolic associations with fragility\, ephemerality and transformation. \nIn this workshop\, participants will honor the Bauhaus spirit of learning by doing and embrace the material possibilities and limitations of unfired clay as a sculptural material in its own right. They will look at some examples of artists — historic and contemporary — who work with unfired clay\, and they will go over some simple handbuilding techniques to get everyone up and running. Some alternative methods of construction and finishing the pieces will be introduced as an option for participants to explore. \nThis program is part of the Wende Bauhaus series\, in which local artists lead hands-on classes inspired by the Bauhaus school’s learning-by-doing philosophy and its spirit of experimentation\, play\, and discovery. \nAbout the teaching artist: Hallie McNeill is an artist and writer currently based in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from the Department of Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work examines how desire and aspiration inform our relationships with language and material culture\, particularly through acts of self-representation. Focusing on the fragility and arbitrariness of organizational systems\, she traces these dynamics both literally—through manufactured conveniences like containers and baskets—and symbolically—through language and other cultural codes. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles at Durden and Ray\, Human Resources\, Sow & Tailor\, and Flux Factory\, and at my pet ram in New York. Her writing has been published in BOMB Magazine and The Rib. She has taught at Pratt Institute\, Pomona College\, and Scripps College.

SUMMARY:Tea Dances at the Glorya Kaufman Community Center
DESCRIPTION:The Wende Museum’s Tea Dance series invites you to move\, mingle\, and unwind through the joyful rhythm of social dance. Hosted in the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, each session features different dance traditions\, ranging from Argentine tango to vintage swing\, led by local artists and dance instructors. No experience or partner required. \nTea dances originated in early 20th-century Britain and America as daytime socials\, often held in hotels and ballrooms\, offering live music\, light refreshments\, and a welcoming space for community connection. Revived in the queer communities of mid-century America\, the tradition evolved into a vibrant celebration of expression and belonging. \nIn that spirit\, our Sunday Tea Dances offer a space to unplug\, connect\, and move together. These afternoons are for everyone: curious beginners\, practiced dancers\, and people just looking to enjoy good music and warm company. \nCome for the class\, stay for the social\, and rediscover the art of togetherness. \nFree and open to all. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. \nMarch 22: Groove and Step\nThis is an all levels dance class that captures certain elements of traditional southern line dance and hip hop choreography simultaneously! The class will involve choreography however\, there is still space for individual creativity and unique dance expression. Groove and Step cultivates energy\, connection\, and JOY! After an intial period to mix and mingle\, an hour-long class will begin at 3:30\, after which time\, attendees will be invited to share their own line dances with the group during the open session until 6:00 pm! \nAbout the instructor: Ronnie Martin is a professional dancer/choreographer from New Orleans\, Louisiana. He has been a part of two major dance companies\, So Real Dance Co. and Texas Southern Dance Co. and has been teaching all levels of hip hop choreography for the past 10 years. Once he relocated to LA he developed a love and passion for fitness which encouraged him to create his own fun and effective way to have the best of both worlds (Dance and Fitness). He has been teaching hip hop cardio classes for 7 years now and line dance classes for 5 years ! He believes that Dance fitness is great way to get active as well decompress. His goal is to constantly create spaces for the advancement of physical and mental health in a creative way! \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. The garden side gate will open 30 minutes before the start time and is available for ADA access and check-in. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served. An RSVP does not guarantee admission once capacity is reached. No late entry.

SUMMARY:Naming the Unknown
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) and the Planetary Program at the Berggruen Institute are thrilled to present Naming the Unknown\, a LARB editor’s salon exploring how language evolves to name and make sense of emerging phenomena in a rapidly changing world. \nWhether from political\, philosophical\, artistic\, or literary vantage points\, language is constantly evolving to capture the realities of the present. Terms like mansplaining\, enshittification\, and the latest internet fixation\, mogging\, show how new words emerge to name experiences that once went unarticulated. Our world is increasingly dominated by a new lexicon as we learn to adapt. \nTo discuss\, LARB and the Berggruen Institute have brought together writers Dashiel Carrera\, Gideon Jacobs\, Jonathan Blake\, and the artists behind the Bureau of Linguistical Reality\, Heidi Quante and Alicia Escott. Join us on the evening of March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Wende Museum for a defining conversation moderated by LARB editor-in-chief Medaya Ocher. \nThis event is made possible with the support of the Planetary Program at the Berggruen Institute. The Berggruen Institute is a think tank with centers in Beijing\, Venice\, and Los Angeles that develops foundational ideas to shape the future\, building new conceptual frameworks that transcend academic disciplines and cultural boundaries while connecting a global network of thinkers to generate ideas with real-world impact. Within this work\, the Planetary Program addresses the political\, philosophical\, and institutional challenges of an interconnected Earth system\, recognizing that issues such as climate change\, technological systems\, and ecological breakdown exceed national borders and require a fundamental rethinking of politics\, responsibility\, and interdependence at a planetary scale. \nDashiel Carrera is a novelist\, Human-Centered AI researcher\, and media artist. A Visiting PhD Researcher at Columbia University\, his research explores how Generative AI will affect the trajectory of contemporary literature. Also the author of The Deer (Dalkey Archive Press\, 2022) and an Assistant Editor at Conjunctions\, his work has been published in Los Angeles Review of Books\, LitHub\, FENCE\, and BOMB\, and his research has taken him to the MIT Media Lab and Harvard’s metaLab. \nGideon Jacobs writes fiction and nonfiction\, contributing to The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, Artforum\, BOMB Magazine\, The Drift\, Heavy Traffic\, and others. He is currently performing a one-man show and working on a novel\, both about images. \nJonathan Blake is Director of Programs at the Berggruen Institute\, where he directs the research projects and wider research agenda for the Planetary Program. Blake is the co-author\, with Nils Gilman\, of Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises (2024) and author of Contentious Rituals: Parading the Nation in Northern Ireland (2019). He previously held research positions at the RAND Corporation\, Columbia Global Policy Initiative\, and the Chumir Foundation. His writing on planetary politics\, governance\, ethnic conflict\, migration\, and more has appeared in Noema\, where he is Associate Editor\, The Atlantic\, Boston Review\, The Nation\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, and scholarly journals. \nHeidi Quante and Alicia Escott are the creators behind The Bureau of Linguistical Reality\, a public participatory artwork focused on creating new language as an innovative way to better understand our rapidly changing world due to manmade climate change and other Anthropocenic events. The vision of the artwork is to provide new words to express what people are feeling and experiencing as our world changes as climate change accelerates. We will be using these new words to facilitate conversations about the greater experiences these words are seeking to express with the view to facilitate a greater cultural shift around climate change.

\nSCHEDULE \nFINISH IT! \nMINI MOON BAG \nApril 5\, 2026 \nTo kick off a month of space exploration-related projects\, we will make mini moon bags modeled after the small pouches seen in the Wende’s Soviet Hippie Collection. Included in the collection is a tailor’s book\, with clippings\, drawings\, and written ideas for clothing modifications and accessories\, including small pouch-like bags. Your bag might hang around your neck\, or attach to your belt\, or be a separate little bag that is held in your purse. Or perhaps your bag is not a bag at all\, but rather a pocket attached to an existing garment that can be opened (or not). We use discarded materials for Samizdat Sundays that are added to and taken away from each week. If you have something special in mind\, please bring it! Otherwise\, be open to the surprises found in our stash of materials. \nAfter our workshop\, check out the Nawruz (Spring) Festival happening around the museum grounds beginning at 1 pm. There will be music\, dance\, crafts\, poetry\, and family activities to welcome spring and the Persian New Year. \nLETTERS TO OUTER SPACE \nApril 12\, 2026 \nThe has a wonderful collection of artifacts related to the mid-century explorations of outer space. The arms race of the Cold War extended to the skies\, as the Soviet Union and the United States raced each other to the moon. Many astronauts have commented on the profound experience of traveling to outer space and seeing our planet floating beside them. The celestial sphere we inhabit has long fascinated and entranced\, across cultures and across time. \nToday\, we will write a “letter” to outer space. This letter might be made of vintage magazines of the moon landing era\, or it might be made of fabric\, or perhaps it will be made of other materials. The idea for a “letter” came after I found a space-era magazine and a stack of oddly large letter envelopes. The envelopes are the proportion of a regular letter envelope but they’re extra large\, just like our universe! You’re invited to fill these envelopes with your dreams and messages to outer space. \nLETTERS TO PLANET EARTH \nApril 19\, 2026 \nAs we did last week\, we will once again make “letters\,” but this time for our home\, Earth. Your letter does not have to be on paper. It does not have to include words. A letter is a correspondence and messages come in many forms. Perhaps your letter is a direction for an action\, like Yoko Ono’s “MAILING PIECE II” from her seminal book\, Grapefruit: “Send the sound of one hundred suns rising at once\,” or perhaps your “letter” is an image or a texture that evokes a feeling. \nFINISH IT! CLINIC \nApril 26\, 2026 \nToday we will finish up projects we’re working on\, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays\, or other projects that have been lingering in our studios or drawer swaiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you\, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials\, if your project requires them. If this is your first time coming to the workshop\, you are welcome to work on a past Samizdat Sunday project. Perhaps you’ll write a letter to outer space\, or perhaps you’ll sew a secret pocket or message into your favorite shirt. Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende.
