SUMMARY:The Sound of the City: How Urban Noise Shapes Brain and Body in LA
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the buzz of studio lights\, the din of freeways\, the howls of coyotes\, and the drone of leaf-blowers\, one of Los Angeles’ most distinctive sounds comes from above. As the birthplace and global capital of helicopter police patrolling\, LA maintains the first and largest police aviation fleet in the world\, making its aerial surveillance an inescapable feature of daily life for millions of residents. This talk traces the local sonic history of that noise and asks what it means for the people living beneath it. \nDrawing on ongoing research\, Shapiro and Tornini move from historical analysis to the frontlines of public health science\, examining how chronic exposure to police helicopter noise shapes health outcomes and educational environments across the city. The talk closes by zooming out to the biological — exploring how these noise exposures alter behavior in animal models\, and how they compound with other urban stressors like extreme heat to produce cascading effects on developing bodies and minds. \nNicholas Shapiro is an Associate Professor of Biology and Society at UCLA and Director of Research at the UCLA-CDU Dana Center for Neuroscience and Society. His community-centered environmental health research has been featured in The New Yorker\, The LA Times\, PBS\, The Guardian\, The Washington Post and beyond. \nValerie Tornini is an Assistant Professor in UCLA’s Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology and the Institute for Society and Genetics. A developmental biologist\, she investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell specification in development\, with a particular focus on the brain\, using zebrafish and other comparative animal models. \nThis event is organized by the Acoustical Society of America Los Angeles Chapter (www.larcasa.org). DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve. SUMMARY:The Future of History: Have We Reached the End of History Again?
DESCRIPTION:Introducing a new multi-part series on “The Future of History\,” presented through the Luskin Public History Program at the Wende in conjunction with the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy. \nThis panel revisits the conclusion of political scientist Francis Fukuyama in his 1992 book The End of History and the Last Man\, that we have reached “the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.” Today\, we are forced to ask whether the rise of illiberal authoritarianism marks a new end of history. \nHow should we think about the next phase of history? As part of an unfolding journey into the future\, or as the beginning of the end? \nMiloš Jovanović is Assistant Professor of History at UCLA. His first book\, Cities of Dust and Mud: Urbanism and Bourgeois Fantasy in the Balkans (Stanford University Press\, 2026)\, explores the social costs of elite-led urban change. His new research project\, Spaces of Empire: The Habsburg World and its Afterlives\, examines the diverse trajectories of urban spaces after imperial collapse. \nDavid N. Myers is Distinguished Professor of History and holds the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History at UCLA. He is the founding director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy. He also directs the UCLA Initiative to Study Hate\, the UCLA Dialogue Across Difference Initiative\, and the UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute. He is the author or editor of more than fifteen books\, including American Shtetl (winner of the 2022 National Jewish Book Award). \nNatasha Piano is Assistant Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Political Science at UCLA. She specializes in democratic theory and the history of political thought\, focusing on realist and empirical traditions in political science and Italian political theory. Her book\, Democratic Elitism: The Founding Myth of American Political Science (Harvard University Press\, 2025)\, examines how misinterpretations of elite theory shaped American political systems. \nTerry Tang is Executive Editor of the Los Angeles Times. Appointed in 2024\, she is the first female editor in the paper’s history. Before joining the Los Angeles Times in 2019\, she served as director of publications and editorial at the American Civil Liberties Union and held multiple editorial roles at The New York Times. DESCRIPTION:Looking to digitize personal or family archival materials? Sign up for the Wende Museum’s Digitization Day on Friday\, May 29th! \nReserve a free 50-minute time slot at one of the Wende Museum’s scanners. In addition to making scanning sessions available through advanced registration\, the Wende is also accepting walk-in appointments. Wende staff will be on hand to help you as needed. Please bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nPlease read the descriptions to decide which equipment to sign up for: \nScanner (participant operated with guidance from staff): Paper materials (photographs\, letters\, ephemera\, etc.) that do not exceed 8.5″ x 11.7″ and slides. \nOversized camera (staff operated but will require participant assistance): Paper materials (including photo albums with photographs that cannot be removed\, scrapbooks\, and paintings) that do not exceed 19″ x 23″. Please note that if an object is glossy\, it will have glare in the image. \nParticipants may only sign up for one piece of equipment during a given time slot. If participants sign up for multiple pieces of equipment during a single session time\, the museum will cancel all but one of the reservations. \nThere will be a small amount of dedicated space for participants to store the materials they would like to digitize while they wait. This space is first come\, first serve. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to reach out to research@wendemuseum.org. \nPreparing For Your Appointment: Consider the quantity of materials you are planning to scan and prioritize the order of specific materials in case you are unable to get through everything in your 50-minute time slot. To participate in the Wende’s Digitization Day\, you must bring your own portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device\, such as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Please note that the amount of storage on the device may limit the number of scans or the types of file formats you can save. TIFFs take up much more storage space than JPGs. If you have questions about what type of portable storage device or file format will work best for your needs\, you can reach out to staff at research@wendemuseum.org. Please make sure your storage device is in working condition and has enough space to store your new scans. \nWhen you arrive\, enter through the front of the Wende Museum. From there\, you will walk through the garden towards the Glorya Kaufman Community Center and check-in to your appointment with Wende staff. Digitization Day will take place in the A-Frame theater of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center. \nPlease plan to arrive at the A-Frame Theater at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in. Once your workspace is ready\, Wende staff will show you how to operate the scanner. Staff will have a staging area available upon request if you would like to organize your materials before you start scanning. If you are signed up for a time slot with the oversized camera\, a Wende team member will work with you for the duration of your appointment. Wende staff will be present throughout the day to assist with any questions that come up while scanning your materials. \nThe number of scans you will get through will be dependent on the file format of the scans. If you are planning to scan your materials as TIFFs (the highest-quality image format type)\, the scan time will be much longer than if you are planning to scan your materials as JPGs. It can take up to 15 seconds to download a high-resolution TIFF image\, so please take that into consideration when deciding which format type to scan your materials as. \nFrequently Asked Questions: I have materials that would be good for the scanner and materials that would be good for the oversized camera\, can I sign up for both? \nYes\, you can sign up for both but you must sign up for the scanner during one time slot and the oversized photography for a different time slot\, as you will be involved in the imaging on both set ups. If you sign up for both the scanner and the oversized photograph during the same time slot\, one will have to be forfeited and given to someone on the waitlist. \nWhat do I need to bring to participate in Digitization Day? \nIn order to participate in Digitization Day\, you must bring materials you would like to scan and a portable USB-A or USB-C-compatible storage device (such as an external hard drive or thumb drive). \nI signed up in-person for an appointment at a later time/am on the waitlist\, what should I do while I wait for an appointment? \nThe museum galleries are open between 10am and 5pm on Fridays and you are welcome to visit the museum while you wait. There are also plenty of cafes and a park near the Wende Museum if you would prefer to wait elsewhere. If you are on the waitlist\, you will receive a call from staff that an appointment has opened up so we recommend you stay within close enough proximity to return to the museum for your session. \nWill the museum staff do the scanning for me? \nWhile staff will be on hand to show you how to operate the machine and assist with trouble shooting\, staff will not be doing the scanning for you. Digitization Day participants will be doing their own scanning.

Curated by pianist Inna Faliks\, this performance features violinist Varty Manouelian\, cellist Ben Hong\, and poet Michelle Bitting in a live exchange between sound and language. \nThis program centers on works by Valentin Silvestrov and Dmitri Shostakovich. Both composers worked under the pressures of Soviet cultural control\, developing musical languages that move between lyricism and unease. Performance of these compositions will unfold alongside readings by Bitting\, creating a dialogue that shifts between voice and instrument\, text and tone. \nOriginally founded by Faliks in New York\, Music/Words has evolved into a platform for artists working at the intersection of music and text. This Los Angeles residency at the Wende builds each program around close listening\, live collaboration\, and the changing balance between composition and language. \nInna Faliks is Head of Piano and Professor of Piano at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and author of Weight in the Fingertips: A Musical Odyssey from Soviet Ukraine to the World Stage. \nVarty Manouelian is a violinist and educator. He is a Lecturer of Violin at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music\, teaches violin and chamber music at the Colburn Academy and the Crowden School Preparatory Academy\, and coaches chamber music at the Apple Hill Festival in New Hampshire. \nBen Hong is a cellist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, where he has performed for over 30 years. He is active as a chamber musician and educator\, with regular appearances at Walt Disney Concert Hall and collaborations across Southern California. \nMichelle Bitting is a poet and essayist whose collections include Notes to the Beloved and Broken Kingdom. Her work appears widely in literary journals\, and her readings emphasize the sonic and performative dimensions of language. \nSpecial thanks to Yamaha Artist Services. \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. Nader scored the original stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s best-selling novel The Kite Runner\, which had a groundbreaking run on Broadway in 2022 and a national tour in 2024. In early 2025\, Salar premiered and toured Zakir Hussain’s Murmurs in Time with Third Coast Percussion\, for whom the piece was written. DESCRIPTION:Across continents and decades\, filmmakers have faced censorship\, intimidation\, and exile for telling uncomfortable truths. Some films were banned outright. Others were attacked\, suppressed\, or quietly buried. The Battle of Algiers is a perfect example of the tension between creative expression and state control. \nSet during the Algerian War of Independence\, the film reconstructs the urban guerrilla campaign waged against French colonial forces in the Casbah of Algiers. What unfolds is an unflinching portrait of resistance\, repression\, and the cycles of violence that define both. Neither side is spared. \nBanned in France for five years after its release and screened by revolutionary movements and military strategists alike\, the film occupies a rare position in cinema history: it has been claimed\, condemned\, and studied by nearly every side of the debates it depicts. Those debates have not ended. Questions about terrorism and counterterrorism\, occupation and resistance\, collective punishment and state violence remain as contested today as they were in 1966. \nCinema Under Pressure presents landmark works that challenged power\, questioned authority\, and faced the consequences. This screening and conversation series examines films that confronted political systems and provoked censorship\, suppression\, or backlash in response. We write to surprise ourselves and discover the bounty of stories that lie within. \nWe come together and write\, choose to share (or not\, you decide)\, listen and write some more.We do this in the beautiful environs of the Wende Museum and its provocative and compelling collection.
