SUMMARY:The Bengali: An Evening of Film and the Power of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of film\, conversation\, and community at the Wende Museum as we explore the stories we inherit\, the identities we carry\, and the unexpected connections that shape our world. \nIn The Bengali\, named one of Nonfics’ Top 20 Documentaries\, director Kavery Kaul takes an American woman to India to uncover the past of her grandfather\, Shaik Mohamed Musa. He was one of the early group of men who arrived in the late nineteenth century and married African-American women. Her unlikely quest triggers a boldly different encounter between East and West. A personal search becomes a deeper journey into culture\, memory\, and identity\, breaking barriers and building bridges\, revealing how histories travel\, and families form across unexpected places. \nThe Bengali has inspired the #UnderOurSun impact campaign\, a digital storyteling movement that invites everyone to share their own cultural heritage and lived experience. Through in-person screenings\, lively panel discussions\, and digital storytelling\, the campaign sparks timely conversation about migration and belonging. \nThe Alliance of Women Film Journalists calls The Bengali “a lyrical and poetic documentary that shows how stories and presumptions can change\, forging connections that are rich and real — not just to the past\, but to the world at large.” \nProgram\n6:00 PM — Reception\n6:30 PM — Doors Open\n6:45 PM — Film Screening\n8:15 PM — Conversation & Audience Q&A \nFeaturing:Kavery Kaul\, Director\, The BengaliJulie Carmen\, Actress\, ProducerNajla Zaidi\, Director\, MPAC® Hollywood BureauModerated by: Lorraine Ali\, News and Culture Critic\, LA Times

SUMMARY:Jazz Refractions: Zeena Parkins How She Works + The Smudges
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Refractions present \n8pm The Smudges \nGenre defying compositions\, daring improvisations and electronically manipulated sounds; The Smudges are ‘cellist’ Maggie Parkins and violinist Jeff Gauthier. \n9pm Zeena Parkins How She Works – solo harp \nWith custom designed electronics\, guitar pedals\, bows\, bolts\, bells\, corks\, samples\, sponges and visuals\, the beginnings of a new solo project has emerged\, How She Works. \nThe music featured at Jazz Refractions is rooted in the jazz tradition of radical improvisation\, freedom\, and technical mastery. However\, once it passes through the Angel City’s lens\, it bends\, distorts\, and shatters into entirely new forms unrestricted by musical genres.

SUMMARY:Student Council 2027 Applications Due
DESCRIPTION:In present times of political and ideological division and the rise of authoritarianism on a global\nscale\, the Wende Museum and the Thomas Mann House are launching a series of monthly\ndiscussions for college and university students to be better able to understand and navigate these\nchanges and discourses. Topics under consideration include the crisis of truth; the contested\nindependence of academic and cultural institutions; and the power of narratives to conceptualize\nchange. \nTogether with a small team from the Wende Museum and the Thomas Mann House\, students\nwill prepare each session based on a few sources (texts\, podcasts\, videos). The final meeting will\ntake the form of a public workshop or panel discussion with specialists in the fields that were\ntouched on throughout the sessions. The participating students will have the opportunity to learn\nabout the field of cultural programming by having access to and close engagement with two\nleading cultural organizations in Los Angeles. In addition\, students will be able to attend\nexclusive events at both the Thomas Mann House and the Wende Museum and learn about their\nunique missions. \nStarting in January 2027\, the meetings will take place every last Friday of the month at 12pm at\nthe Wende Museum’s Community Center in Culver City. Complimentary lunch and drinks will\nbe provided. \nIf interested\, please send an application letter to Oliver Hartmann (oliver.hartmann@vatmh.org)\nand Joes Segal (jsegal@wendemuseum.org) before November 1\, 2026\, mentioning your\nacademic background (college or university and major) and a one-paragraph explanation of why\nyou would like to join this discussion series. Please mention “Student Council 2027” in the email\nsubject line.

SUMMARY:WIP 024
DESCRIPTION:WIP 024 features works in progress by Kendra Adler & Lynsey Peisinger + Nathalie Love. \nWhat is WIP? \nWIP is an artist-led\, work-in-progress performance platform co-founded by dance artists Kate Wallich\, Stephanie Zaletel\, and Belize Wilheim. By centering progressive and innovative work that challenges convention\, WIP strengthens the local ecosystem and deepens connections between artists\, arts institutions\, and audiences. \nwww.instagram.com/wipla.grid

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. No experience with meditation or group work is required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nMore at tuesdaymensclub.com
