FRAMEWORKS | Ivana Dama: The Air Belongs to the Children

FRAMEWORKS is a new interdisciplinary music series for 2025 designed to take audiences on an adventurous cultural and artistic journey in the state-of-the-art A-Frame Theater of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center, on the campus of the Wende Museum. The series merges creative disciplines, from film and dance to poetry and music, and takes inspiration from the collection and exhibitions of the Wende.

Sound artist and researcher Ivana Dama will use analog synthesizers to create an atmospheric and ambient soundscape, incorporating custom-made capacitive sensors developed in collaboration with the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms, together with Neil Gershenfeld and Quentin Bolsee. She will present something she calls “Figures in Air,” appearing to touch mere air to activate sound. Visuals created live from her instruments will enhance this experiential, immersive performance.

Ivana Dama was born and raised in Belgrade shortly after the end of the civil war and during the time of NATO bombing. The tension between the former Yugoslavian countries was still undoubtedly present. Even though she was only a young child when the bombing began, images and sounds of the destruction still clearly permeate her mind. The memories of living in a small shelter with the sounds and vibrations of the air raid sirens have contributed to her interest in using air and sound as a primary medium. Her work, which includes audio-video installations, robotics, web projects, and music performances, explores the deep connections between sound, memory, and human experience. Ivana holds an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University and a prior degree from UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture.
