SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project\, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making. \nWe encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt\, a pair of jeans\, or any textile you’re ready to transform\, repair\, or experiment with. \nEach session is free\, open to all skill levels\, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch\, alter\, repair\, and imagine new forms of expression. \nSCHEDULE \nFINISH IT! CLINIC \nMarch 29\, 2026 \nToday we will finish up projects we’re working on\, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays\, or other projects that have been lingering in your studio or drawer waiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you\, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials\, if your project requires them. If this is your first time coming to the workshop\, you are welcome to work on a past Samizdat Sunday project. Perhaps you’ll make a series of mail art collage postcards\, or perhaps you’ll sew a secret pocket or message into your favorite shirt. Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende. \nMINI MOON BAG \nApril 5\, 2026 \nTo kick off a month of space exploration-related projects\, we will make mini moon bags modeled after the small pouches seen in the Wende’s Soviet Hippie Collection. Included in the collection is a tailor’s book\, with clippings\, drawings\, and written ideas for clothing modifications and accessories\, including small pouch-like bags. Your bag might hang around your neck\, or attach to your belt\, or be a separate little bag that is held in your purse. Or perhaps your bag is not a bag at all\, but rather a pocket attached to an existing garment that can be opened (or not). We use discarded materials for Samizdat Sundays that are added to and taken away from each week. If you have something special in mind\, please bring it! Otherwise\, be open to the surprises found in our stash of materials. \nAfter our workshop\, check out the Nawruz (Spring) Festival happening around the museum grounds beginning at 1 pm. There will be music\, dance\, crafts\, poetry\, and family activities to welcome spring and the Persian New Year. \nLETTERS TO OUTER SPACE \nApril 12\, 2026 \nThe has a wonderful collection of artifacts related to the mid-century explorations of outer space. The arms race of the Cold War extended to the skies\, as the Soviet Union and the United States raced each other to the moon. Many astronauts have commented on the profound experience of traveling to outer space and seeing our planet floating beside them. The celestial sphere we inhabit has long fascinated and entranced\, across cultures and across time. \nToday\, we will write a “letter” to outer space. This letter might be made of vintage magazines of the moon landing era\, or it might be made of fabric\, or perhaps it will be made of other materials. The idea for a “letter” came after I found a space-era magazine and a stack of oddly large letter envelopes. The envelopes are the proportion of a regular letter envelope but they’re extra large\, just like our universe! You’re invited to fill these envelopes with your dreams and messages to outer space. \nLETTERS TO PLANET EARTH \nApril 19\, 2026 \nAs we did last week\, we will once again make “letters\,” but this time for our home\, Earth. Your letter does not have to be on paper. It does not have to include words. A letter is a correspondence and messages come in many forms. Perhaps your letter is a direction for an action\, like Yoko Ono’s “MAILING PIECE II” from her seminal book\, Grapefruit: “Send the sound of one hundred suns rising at once\,” or perhaps your “letter” is an image or a texture that evokes a feeling. \nFINISH IT! CLINIC \nApril 26\, 2026 \nToday we will finish up projects we’re working on\, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays\, or other projects that have been lingering in our studios or drawer swaiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you\, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials\, if your project requires them. If this is your first time coming to the workshop\, you are welcome to work on a past Samizdat Sunday project. Perhaps you’ll write a letter to outer space\, or perhaps you’ll sew a secret pocket or message into your favorite shirt. Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the garden gate from the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Nawruz (Spring) Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Wende Museum is pleased to partner with the Aga Khan Museum and The Ismaili Council for the Western United States in organizing a fun-filled day of activities for the entire family at this celebration. \nThe festival of Nawruz coincides with the vernal equinox\, on the 20th of March — when the sun crosses the equator and equalizes day and night. In the Persian calendar\, this event marks the New Year\, and Nawruz\, the 21st of March\, is the ‘new day’ that marks the beginning of Spring. It is a day to offer gratitude for the bounties of life and to express renewed hope and optimism for the future. \nNawruz is celebrated by over three hundred million people in the Balkans\, the Caucasus\, Central and South Asia\, and by Iranians worldwide. It signals the transition from a dull and grey winter to a vibrant and colorful spring\, a promise of new life and abundance. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the delicate intertwining of nature and humanity\, one that sustains us and needs to be preserved. \nActivities include live musical and dance performances\, calligraphy workshop\, tile painting\, henna painting\, planting seeds\, button making\, creating greeting cards\, poetry recitations\, children’s egg painting\, and Persian tea and refreshments.

SUMMARY:S.U.T@LA – Vipassana Meditation Practice Group
DESCRIPTION:Practice Isn’t Just on the Cushion — It’s Wherever Life Takes Us \nOur practice is inspired by the teachings of Sayadaw U Tejaniya (S.U.T)\, which invite us to bring wise awareness into every part of life. Mindfulness isn’t just for the cushion — it’s for the small\, ordinary moments that make up our days. \nSome weeks\, we’ll sit together in silence at the Wende Museum. Other times\, practice might take us outdoors for a gentle hike\, to a public event\, on a mindful shopping trip\, or even online via Zoom. Wherever we are\, the essence of practice remains the same: staying present\, open\, and kind. \nThis new L.A.-based sangha is rooted in curiosity\, ease\, and Dharma friendship. Together\, we’ll explore how to live with awareness and discover what unfolds when we meet life just as it is. We warmly invite you to join us — to sit\, to walk\, to laugh\, and to grow together on this path of practice. \nPlease note we are holding Q&A session from 5PM. Q&A sessions are for continuing students only. Please contact me if you are interested in joining.

SUMMARY:WIP 022
DESCRIPTION:WIP 022 features works in progress by Faye Driscoll & Toogie Barcelo followed by a post-show talk back moderated by WIP alum Laura Stinger. \nWhat is WIP? \nWIP is an artist-led\, work-in-progress performance platform co-founded by dance artists Kate Wallich\, Stephanie Zaletel\, and Belize Wilheim. Launched in 2023\, WIP was created to give choreographers and performance makers a “low-tech\, high-visibility” space to share evolving works with audiences\, fostering curiosity\, dialogue\, and critical exchange at every stage of development. \nThe format is simple: each WIP features two artists sharing up to 25 minutes of work-in-progress\, followed by a moderated post-show conversation. \nWIP’s mission is to provide a supportive and sustainable environment for artists to test new ideas\, receive meaningful feedback\, and catalyze experimentation within the Los Angeles dance and performance community. By centering progressive and innovative work that challenges convention\, WIP strengthens the local ecosystem and deepens connections between artists\, arts institutions\, and audiences. \nhttps://www.wipla.info/#info

SUMMARY:Tuesday Men's Club
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Men’s Club is a gathering for men to sit in meditation\, have an honest conversation\, and enjoy each other’s company. Men of all ages (our group ranges from 27 to 82) gather after work every other Tuesday. Some nights we talk about integrity\, grief\, or what it means to show up. Other nights it’s managing screen time\, coaching Little League\, parenting teenagers\, staying in shape\, or dealing with tennis elbows. \nThe format is simple: we introduce ourselves\, we meditate\, we talk\, and then we eat ice cream. \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at the Wende Museum. No experience with meditation or group work is required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nMore at tuesdaymensclub.com.

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday: Mindfulness Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful A-Frame Theater of the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. Each session is followed by complimentary garden refreshments and an optional movement class. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal and others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd. Limited floor space is first come\, first serve. Please arrive early as RSVP does not guarantee admission to this free program.

SUMMARY:Eat Your Ice Cream: A Conversation with Ezekiel J Emanuel\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling author Ezekiel J Emanuel shares science-based tips on aging happily and healthily. \nJoin us at the Wende Museum for a conversation with Ezekiel J Emanuel\, MD\, author of Eat Your Ice Cream! \nDr Emanuel will explore aging in a dignified and enjoyable manner\, and provide actionable tips for living a longer\, healthier life. Decades of medical experience have made Dr Emanuel one of the leading experts in his field. Come hear what you can learn from that experience\, and how you can implement it in your own life! \nAbout the author: \nEzekiel J. Emanuel\, MD is a vice provost and professor at the University of Pennsylvania. A bioethicist\, health policy expert\, and oncologist\, he was one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act. He is a regular guest on CNN and MSNBC and often contributes to the New York Times\, Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, and Atlantic. He lives in Washington\, DC. \nAbout the book: \nEveryone wants to live a full and healthy life—and every day brings a tidal wave of attention-grabbing misinformation\, faddish ideas from “wellness” influencers\, and bizarre advice from news outlets over-extrapolating the results of tiny\, outlier studies. The “Wellness Industrial Complex” prescribes conflicting and complicated regimens while promising us more time to enjoy in the future—though it sure is demanding a lot of time right now. But what actually matters most to our health and longevity? What has the most robust\, actionable evidence? What’s the junk you can skip? \nIn Eat Your Ice Cream\, renowned physician Ezekiel J. Emanuel argues that life is not a competition to live the longest and that “wellness” shouldn’t be difficult; it should be an invisible part of one’s lifestyle that yields maximum health benefits with the least work. Dr. Emanuel cuts through the noise with wit and good humor\, giving readers just what they need: simple\, high-impact\, evidence-based guidelines on such issues as alcohol consumption\, food and nutrition\, exercise\, sleep\, mental acuity\, and social engagement. Resisting the tide of the latest trends to extend life at all costs\, Eat Your Ice Cream reveals that many of the tools for a long\, healthy and meaningful life are already within reach. \nPairing common sense with uncommon wisdom based on his decades of expertise and experience\, Dr. Emanuel helps us consider which lifestyle changes are worth making and how to most easily implement them for longer\, healthier\, and happier lives. Readers will come away with greater clarity and a deeper understanding of what really matters for well-being—connection\, purpose\, and sustainable choices backed by rigorous science.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Cady Stanton: A Revolutionary Life with Ellen Carol DuBois
DESCRIPTION:UCLA’s Ellen Carol DuBois presents a new portrait of Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, one of the most influential and controversial figures in the history of American reform. \nDrawing on extensive archival research and Stanton’s own writings\, DuBois traces her life from an upbringing shaped by the American Revolution and evangelical revivalism to her partnership with Susan B. Anthony and leadership in the women’s rights movement. The talk follows Stanton’s later years in Great Britain\, where she engaged new ideas about socialism and reform. \nWhile best known for her role in securing women’s suffrage\, Stanton emerges here as a far more radical thinker. She advocated for women’s reproductive and sexual autonomy\, challenged the institution of marriage\, and criticized religion’s role in subordinating women. Her commitment to liberty and equality made her both a central force in American democracy and a deeply polarizing figure. \nDuBois also addresses Stanton’s contradictions\, including her conflicts with Black reformers and the limitations of her worldview. The result is a portrait of a figure whose influence remains unsettled and whose ideas continue to provoke debate. \nEllen Carol DuBois is Distinguished Research Professor of History at UCLA. A leading scholar of U.S. women’s history\, her work focuses on the political history of the women’s suffrage movement\, American feminism\, and transnational feminism. She is the author and editor of numerous influential books and essays on women’s rights and has received major fellowships\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. \nAs this event takes place during museum open hours\, guests may check in at the front of the museum. The garden side gate will open 30 minutes before the start time for ADA access and check-in. Theater doors open 15 minutes before the start time. Seating is first come\, first served.
