Commemorative Plates

Storming of the Winter Palace, Meissen, 1967

Ranging from the commemorative to the everyday, as well as from the finest Meissen porcelain to individually hand-carved wood, the Wende Museum collection contains more than 1,000 plates with examples from major porcelain manufacturers in East Germany. These plates were commissioned by a number of official organizations, forming a lexicon of the symbols and iconography that permeated the culture of Cold War-era East Germany and Eastern Europe through the fusion of text and image.
