Join us for the sixth installment of the Wende discussion series Art Past Present. Chief Curator Joes Segal will moderate an interactive conversation with Russian-born artist Vitaly Komar as he considers how interpreting the past informs the present.

In the early 1970s, Vitaly Komar and his colleague Alexander Melamid founded the Sots Art movement, the Soviet counterpart to Pop Art, with its ironic and humorous take on Soviet politics and history. Both artists emigrated to the United States in 1978 and continued to collaborate until 2003, among other things on their project of “Most and Least Wanted Paintings.” Komar will discuss his experiences as an artist in the Soviet Union and the United States, including the ideas behind the monumental angel that is part of the current exhibition Crumbling Empire.
