This collection of documents, photographs, and negative strips is bound together in a light blue hard-back cover. Documentation describes the design and appearance of passports of different countries. The documents are accompanied by photographs which show details of the passport design and important features such as stamps, watermarks, and imprints. Information on Swiss passports, new passports issued to citizens of West Berlin from April 1st, 1987, and travel documents issued to Palestinian refugees in 1988 are included. Photographs of those passports listed above, as well as those from other countries appear in this archive. Of particular interest is a portion dedicated to documentation and information for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). This section provides general information on the land area, population, and economy of the country and includes 6 photographs to show the design, layout, and characteristics of North Korean passports. Also bound into the book are negative strips, image lists (some hand-written and others type-written), information and instructions from the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit - the Ministry of State Security. This comprehensive description and visualisation of different passports was useful for border guards to study to be able to recognize the origin and special features of passports from other countries. This was especially useful when new passport templates were issued, allowing the border guards to stay up-to-date on current passport formats.
