A mostly yellow and white ceramic plate commemorating SG Dynamo Dresden's 1977 domestic double winning season. The center front side of the plate depicts the Dynamo Dresden crest, a football player kicking a ball, and words commemorating the occasion. A thick yellow band lines the circumference of the plate. The back of the plate is plain apart from the East German football association logo in the center. SG Dynamo Dresden is one of East Germany's oldest and most successful football clubs. It can trace its origins back to 1874's Dresden English Football Club which later became Dresdner SC. After WWII, Dresdner SC became SG Dresden Friedrichstadt. The club would once again change name during the 1950/51 season to SG Volkspolizei Dresden. This version of the team was created to appease fans after a number of SG Friedrichstadt players fled to West Germany in protest of an alleged manipulated April 1950 championship final. The new team was composed of the 17 best People's Police players in the region, and it achieved early success in the following years. SG Dynamo Dresden was finally born on April 12, 1953 and won the DDR-Oberliga that very same year. Hearing of SG Dynamo Dresden’s success, Erich Mielke, Head of the Stasi, decided to strip the team of their place in the Oberliga, moved the squad to Berlin, and renamed them SC Dynamo Berlin (later BFC Dynamo). What was left of SG Dynamo Dresden was forced to compete in the second division. After years of playing in the lower leagues, Dynamo Dresden returned to the Oberliga in the 1962-63 season but were relegated back to lower leagues soon after. They reached the Oberliga again in 1969 and remained in East Germany’s top-flight until reunification in 1991. This marked the start of their most successful era which saw them win 5 league titles during the 1970s. They even managed to win the domestic double (league and cup) two times during this spell in 1971 and 1977. The 1970s was also their most dominant international period, only losing 3/49 international home games. After 10 consecutive title wins by BFC Dynamo, Dresden regained the league title in 1989 and won its third double a year later. Though they were one of two East German teams to secure promotion to the reunified 1991/92 Bundesliga, they have struggled to remain in the first division ever since. As of the 2025/26 season, they are a bottom-half second division side.
