In the German Democratic Republic, Heroes of Labor, workers who significantly exceeded the production quotas, were honored by the leading Socialist Unity Party. The miner Adolf Hennecke surpassed the standard quota for coal mining on one single day by nearly 400%. To celebrate his achievement, a statue was commissioned from the Meißen porcelain factory close to Dresden, one of Europe’s finest producers of porcelain objects since the early eighteenth century. Sculptures, paintings and posters commemorating heroes of labor were used to inspire workers and increase productivity.
