A small Sandmännchen (Sand Man) doll with blonde hair and beard, a red cap and coat, green corduroy pants, and a dark blue cape. The Sandman was the main character of the long-running East German stop-motion television program Unser Sandmännchen (Our Little Sandman) that debuted in 1958. In each episode, the Sandman visited children and told them bedtime stories that were shown in the form of short cartoons or other episodes. After a story, he would throw sand in their eyes, wish them a good night, and return to his home. The nightly show appealed to young audiences and enforced the political ideology of the GDR. Wolfgang Richter (1928–2004) composed the opening and closing theme songs, and Gerhard Behrendt (1929–2006) created the puppets.
