Proportioned like a golf cart, minus wheels, the Fahrtrainer driving simulator provided an ingenious halfway point for driving instruction in East Germany. Before moving out into real traffic with accompanying jitters, learners could spend time under controlled conditions inside a mobile trailer by taking the wheel of the simulator. Facing a screen showing a film presentation of authentic road conditions, students operated the controls, while their active responses (steering, braking, shifting gears, and accident avoidance) were recorded for subsequent review and improvement.
