After the experience of the 1950s, when a virtual migration of many thousands of East Germans across the border to the West had nearly undermined the GDR economy, the Berlin Wall was designed to make sure there was no repetition of the brain drain among persons of working age. For senior citizens and pensioners, however, the Politbüro took a more lenient position, permitting travel to the West after 1964 for those whose contribution to the economy was insignificant and whose pensions were in fact regarded as a fiscal burden. This scrapbook belonged to an older couple living in Friedrichshagen in East Berlin who frequently traveled to vacation homes and resorts in and around the GDR (suggesting their privileged status) as well as to their old home in the West Berlin district of Neukölln.
