Berlin: Das Loch in der Mauer

Measurements: 10.5 cm x 14.8 cm; 4 1/8 in x 5 13/16 in
Sepia-tone postcard shows two East German guards either side of a gaping hole in the Berlin Wall, through which a young man can be seen on the West side of the Wall. The Wall itself is in a state of disrepair: the steel reinforcements are partly visible due to gashes in the cement, and there is some graffiti. The postcard has a three dimensional feature whereby the hole in the wall is partially can be pushed through to physically create a hole through the postcard. The ability to traverse the Wall by simply pushing a finger through it is perhaps an attempt to show the increasing openness between East and West and the growing obsoleteness of the Wall.
