Color photograph of West Berliners climbing the Berlin Wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate. The photograph was taken from the West side of the Wall and shows groups of people, many of them teenagers, gathered by the Wall and standing on top of it. The Wall is covered in graffiti and appears disheveled. The German flag flies from the top of the Brandenburg Gate. The fall of the Berlin Wall began on November 9th, 1989, after Günter Schabowski announced at a press conference that the border would be opened immediately and without delay. Official demolition of the Wall began only in June 1990, though by that time the Wall was already significantly damaged by public action, as is evident from this photograph. To stand on top of a monument that divided a city and represented repression for so many years is a powerful and liberating act, and many Berliners were keen to make this symbolic gesture.
