A piece of paper with 3 black-and-white photographs in a row, numbered in green ink. Along the bottom of the photographs is the typewritten text: "Zur Einreise erscheint ein niederländischer Reise Paßinhaber und will mit gezeigtem Foto einreisen. Bild 2 zeigt Foto des vorgelegten Vergleichsdokumentes, Bild 3 zeigt Originalfoto des Bürgers. Würden Sie die Einreise gestatten?" In English: "A Dutch passport holder appears for entry [into the GDR] and wants to enter with the photograph above [Image 1]. Image 2 shows a photograph of the submitted comparison document, Image 3 shows an original photo of the citizen. Would you allow entry?" The document essentially asks whether the three photographs show the same person, and whether the individual pictured in Image 3 is travelling with legitimate identity documentation. This was likely a teaching tool for border guards in the GDR, intended as practice for identity recognition at the checkpoints. It is possible that this situation did occur at the border, and was later used as an opportunity for instruction.
