Do Not Disturb the Ecology of Morality

Date Made: 1989
Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 90 cm x 60 cm; 35 7/16 in x 23 5/8 in

This painting depicts a Russian Orthodox Church in the foreground with snow covering the rooftops. Directly behind are two red smokestacks that appear to be part of the church complex. The church and the smokestacks merge into each other, with the lower part of the smokestack made up of church materials, and the golden paint of the church turning to the red paint of the smokestack in the bottom right corner of the building. The melding of church and industry reflects the secular character of Soviet communism, based on “the religion of progress.” Among the questions the composition provokes are: Does the church support industry? Is Industry the new religion?
