The painting illustrates a shattered Soviet commemorative plate with the words “He Who Doesn’t Work, Doesn’t Eat" around its edge. This socialist motto was rooted in the idea that the Soviet Union would build a new classless society where an individual was defined by his or her function in society. However, the plate of equality is shattered into pieces, undoing the socialist principle, which is embodied in the shape of a hammer and sickle formed by the empty space between the plate fragments.
