Date Made: 1991
Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 90 cm x 60 cm; 35 7/16 in x 23 5/8 in

The famous Spasskaya Tower of the Kremlin in Moscow, an internationally recognized symbol of the Soviet Union, is drawn here in black and white, albeit with its clock replaced by a compass. The only color in the composition is the red star atop the tower, the red needle of the compass, which points due west, and the red “E” of the compass demarcating east. Painted in 1991 by Vaganov on a trip to Los Angeles, this image references Mikhail Gorbachev’s policies of restructuring (perestroika) and openness (glasnost) that characterized the drastic shift in Russian government policy towards a friendlier approach to the West.
