This painting, entitled in Russian, “On the scrapheap of history,” features a trashcan filled with a cracked bust of Stalin, a book entitled “Stalin,” and a pair of handcuffs. On the floor next to the trashcan is a book entitled “Lenin,” as well as Stalin’s smoldering pipe lit by a red ember emitting a stream of black smoke. Since the painting was done in 1994, several years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the finalty of putting these two leaders, Stalin and Lenin, in a trashcan, takes on a more permanent significance.
