This map of the Soviet Union resembles dry bread breaking apart. The cracks represent borders between the USSR's various nationalities as these republics claimed their independence in a delicate political situation that was further aggravated by food shortages. Bread had a powerful significance for the Soviet people. Dry black bread was associated with the hunger suffered by millions of Russian peasants that persisted for centuries of Tsarist rule. Knowing this, the artist adopted the symbol and used it to represent the tumultuous break-up of the Soviet Union 1991. The edges of the Soviet Union also bear a resemblance to a cut of beef, at some points there are even red blood-like outlines - especially visible where there is a break with the three Baltic states.
