Description

The only text on this painting are the dates 1941 and 1945, the years of World War II or the Great Patriotic War, as it is known in Russia. The figures in the center of the painting are hugging and surrounded on all sides by light colored candles painted over dark brown rectangles, reminiscent of the shape of coffins. The overlapping hands of the hugging figures, as well as their melancholic facial expressions, are distinctly scratched into the painting rather than painted. The sad embrace in conjunction with the border of candles pays homage to the high number of causualties in the war.
