A golden swastika made up of a hammer and sickle placed over a vivid red background with a distinct, dark shadow directly under the swastika is the central image of this work. Atop the swastika is the outline of the red Communist star, to the bottom right is the year 1937, and the title “Cult” in Russian is centered along the bottom of the whole composition. Stalin’s Great Purges took place from 1937-1939, but 1937 was the start of “Yezhovshchina,” a period of terror characterized by the excessive violence of the head of the Soviet secret police Nikolai Yezhov. The hammer and sickle swastika draws a parallel between the Soviet governments show trials and arrests of 1937 and Hitler’s reign in Germany in the same period.
