Who Can Live in Russia?

Date Made: 1990
Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 60 cm x 90 cm; 23 5/8 in x 35 7/16 in

Utkin's caption along the bottom edge of the painting, "Who Can Live in Russia?," is a play on the work "Who is Happy in Russia?" by 19th century poet Nikolai Nekrasov. Nekrasov tells the story of seven peasants who set out to ask various elements of the rural population if they are happy; the answer is never satisfactory. Utkin paints a Russian peasant woman coming through a door from a fruitful landscape into a grim Soviet landscape with no farm life, only factories. The detached door is fantastically placed in the middle of barren, cracked ground, unsupported by anything.
