Country: Soviet Union
Measurements: 60 cm x 90 cm; 23 5/8 in x 35 7/16 in
A drawing of Stalin stares at the viewer from the center of the frame, surrounded by red handprints and splattered red dots. The date “19.08.91” to the right of Stalin’s face, commemorates the day of the failed coup attempt by the State Committee on the State of Emergency to oust Gorbachev from power. The title of the poster, “Panopticon,” references a type of prison architecture where all prisoners hypothetically can be watched by a single guard from any location. Stalin’s direct gaze at the viewer suggests he is the single guard, constantly watching every member of the Soviet population, even after his death.
