Good Morning, Dear City

Date Made: 1990
Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 60 cm x 90 cm; 23 5/8 in x 35 7/16 in

The painting shows a hazy red sunrise over a Soviet city made up of a few buildings nestled among many links of red sausages. The title of the piece written in Russian above the sunset reads, “Good morning, dear city,” a reference to a famous Russian song entitled, “Moscow May,” in which Moscow is praised as the model city of the Soviet Union and the heart of the Motherland. The large amount of outsized sausages strewn about Moscow is a comically unappealing image when compared with the idea of Moscow as the model city of the Soviet Union; unlike other model cities, where industry and factories dominate the landscape, this city has overproduced an unsustainable amount of sausage that has overtaken the city.
