We Plowed!
Date Made: 1988
Country: Soviet Union
Measurements: 89 cm x 55 cm; 35 1/16 in x 21 5/8 in
In the foreground, a red tractor is parked in a field of grains; built on top of the cab is a bookcase-like structure with three shelves, each containing purple, shadowy figures. The bottom shelf has the most busts crowded together, all in the shape of pawns from a chessboard, the middle shelf contains three figures reminiscent of genie lamps, and the top shelf features the bust of a single figure in a suit and hat with a briefcase at his side. The title of the work, “We plowed!,” references the era of forced collectivization, when men in the Kremlin made decisions about the best work practices for millions of Soviet farmers without understanding of the real life ramifications of their idealized plans.
