An offending, contemptuous gesture of a thumb thrusting between two closed fingers sits on top of a pile in Aleksandr Vaganov’s work “The Peak of Communism,” a reference to the highest mountain in Tajikistan, called first Stalin Peak and later The Peak of Communism (in 1998 it was re-named Ismoil Somoni Peak). This gesture of insult symbolizes disillusionment in the Soviet ideological construct.
