This artwork mimics the style and content of Matisse’s 1910 painting entitled “La Musique.” In the Matisse painting, five male figures are situated on a green hill with a blue sky as the backdrop, a setting almost identical to the backdrop of another famous Matisse work, “La Dance.” In this painting, the five figures are placed on a black and white backdrop in identical positions to the five figures in the Matisse painting. However, although these figures are a comparable red tone to those of Matisse, several of the seated figures in the composition are missing limbs, their arms or legs ending abruptly with cleancut stumps. Nor have the figures the same amount of detail of facial features as in the Matisse work; they have slashes for eyes and no other facial markings.
