In this painting, windows in the foreground fade into smaller Christian crosses in the background, all suspended mid-air in a cloudly, red-tinged space. In the left foreground, one window contains the heads of a man and woman with their three children, painted so that the facial features are barely distinguishable from the cloudy background. The title of the work, “Requiem,” printed in red in the upper lefthand corner, conveys a message of rememberance for the souls of the dead. The painting visually references the period of Stalin’s Great Purges, when hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens were arrested, exiled, or executed at Stalin’s whim.
