Gorbachev is depicted as both sides of the king of clubs, wearing a sketched gold crown with stars at its peaks. The title of the work, “Alternative,” refers to the two apparent alternatives in the painting, a “1.” labels the top Gorbachev, and “II.” labels the upside down Gorbachev; the two alternatives are essentially identical. Gorbachev attempted to provide an alternative to the authoritarian style of Communist rule practiced by his predeccesors by introducing glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), but the policies failed to create the socialist utopia that he desired. Gorbachev provided no alternative for the Soviet people; his policies simply represented the other side of the same card.
