This painting depicts a portrait of a man with no eyes, nose, or mouth; the only facial feature is a moustache that clearly identifies him as Stalin, as supported by the title of the work, “Stalinism!” The portrait could speak to the transient nature of Soviet leaders, that they can succeed each other in rapid succession by just changing the facial features of their official portraits. The facelessnes of the portrait may also represent that multitude of Soviet citizens arrested, exiled, and executed under Stalin’s rule in his quest to eliminate all possible threats to his power.
