Furniture

Many people characterize the East Bloc countries during the Cold War as predominantly drab and gray, but in terms of everyday interior design they were hardly less colorful and “modern” than their capitalist counterparts. In hindsight, the parallels between objects from roughly the same period in East and West are more striking than the differences. Meanwhile, elements of modernity, tradition, and kitsch were to be found on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Remarkable pieces in our collection are the colorfully decorated kidney tables and plant stands, and the Garden Egg Chair from Hungarian designer Peter Ghyczy, who sold his model to a West German company, which in turn had the chair produced in East Germany – an interesting example of Cold War cultural border crossing.
